Bill Thorne again thanked the golf committee for their hard work this year. Regina Beatty presented a check from the Hannastown Ladies Golf League for $1,000. Thank you Regina!!
Rotary District 7330 is sponsoring a hole at the Mylan Classic at Southpointe Golf Club in Canonsburg. Volunteers are needed. Please see Leia Shilobod for the registration form and additional information.
The 2010 Pitt-Greensburg Golf Outing is Friday, September 24 at 8:30 a.m. at the Greensburg Country Club. Proceeds benefit alumni, athletics and the President’s Scholarship Fund. The cost is $150/golfer; $600/foursome ($135/golfer; $540/foursome if registered by August 24). Sponsorship opportunities are still available, please call 724.836.7039 for information.
The JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes will be on Saturday, September 11 at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg. Registration is at 8:30 a.m. with the walk start time at 10 a.m. To register for the JDRF Walk, please visit www.jdrf.org. Speaker:
Adib Barsoum introduced our speaker, Robert Rogalski, Chief Executive Officer of Excela Health System. Mr. Rogalski was appointed CEO of Excela Health System in January 2010 after serving as transition CEO for Excela Health System since November 2009. Prior to this appointment, Bob served as senior counsel and health care practice group co-leader at Thorp Reed and Armstrong. He has more than 17 years experience advising health care systems and hospitals on a variety of legal matters including risk management and compliance, corporate governance, acquisitions and other strategic transaction and contract negotiations. In his new role as CEO, Bob will set aside his legal career temporarily to devote his attention to Excela Health full time. Prior to joining Thorp Reed and Armstrong, he served as in-house counsel for health systems in western Pennsylvania and the upper Midwest, most recently as vice president and general counsel and compliance officer for Medcenter One Health System in Bismarck, North Dakota. Prior experience includes working as in-house counsel at West Penn Allegheny Health System and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. A graduate of Saint Vincent College, Bob received his juris doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.
Mr. Rogalski’s topic is “What is Excela Health?” The Excela Health System was put together 5 years ago and now includes Frick, Latrobe and Westmoreland hospitals. The board of directors from each community decided to work together, become unified and look out for the community as a whole. The board is currently working to bring on a new group of directors to lead the health system. Excela Health System is a non-profit organization and a non-stock corporation. The earnings of the health system are required to go back into the hospital.
Excela is working hard to deliver the highest quality of service with currently 5,000 employees and over $500 million in annual revenue. In fiscal year 2009, Excela lost $3 million, but this year Excela will make $6 million.
Jeannette Hospital was part of the health system, but a decision was made to close the in patient services last March due to poor statistics, i.e. only 8 patients per day, no surgeries scheduled, etc. Most patients were taking their needs to other locations. Westmoreland Hospital’s Emergency Department is now seeing over 200 patients per day.
Mr. Rogalski answered many questions from our members. Thank you to Mr. Rogalski for his very informative talk.

John Hanna reminds us of the Annual Greensburg Rotary Club Picnic being held on Tuesday, August 17th. Please be sure to sign up if you wish to attend.
Anna Peagler announced the WCCC 40th Anniversary Community Day, Saturday, September 18th, 11 AM – 6 PM at the WCCC campus. There will be a car cruise, food booths, farmers market, “Dancing Queen” band and much more.
Larry Blake announced the Highway Cleanup Project, 8 AM, next weekend, meeting at the tennis court in front of the Greensburg Country Club.
The Food Bank at Our Lady of Grace Church will be held this Saturday starting at 9 AM. Volunteers are asked to just stop by and help out.

There will be a Board of Directors meeting this Thursday evening at 5:30 PM at President Mark’s office.
TODAY’S PROGRAM
The “Greensburg, Kansas Project” started after the horrific tornado struck on May 4th in 2007. Our Club has been involved ever since under the direction of Mark Barnhart.
Jeff Malloy handled the duties of presenting today.
Photos of before and after showed the devastation that occurred. He said that 95% of the structures of the town were destroyed. There were 11 fatalities. Wind speeds reached 205 MPH making it the first fatal storm since 1967 in SW Kansas.
In a recent trip, Mark Barnhart, Katy Doran, Jeff Malloy, Jeff Blanchetti, Jordan Funk, Dan Ott and Fred Gosnell took up the task of helping to rebuild a piece of that community. The “Teen Youth Center” was the project. Debris needed removed, windows trimmed, ceiling tile installation, lawn grading and raking and much more.
Dan and Jeff B. commented on the “green construction” technology. All who traveled to Kansas commented on the kind people of Kansas and the very kind and generous members of our Club who made this exchange possible.
The group thanked our Club for this opportunity to put “Service Above Self”.

Announcements:
The Rotary Picnic is next Tuesday from 5 – 8 p.m. at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg. Today is the last day to sign-up. Please join us for an evening of fun. There will be no Rotary lunch next week!
The Sons of Italy are having a golf tournament on Friday, September 10 at Hannastown Golf Club. The 12:30 shotgun includes a sandwich at the turn and dinner at Bar Rizzi. The cost is $100 per golfer. Sponsorship opportunities are available. If interested, please contact Tony Martino.

Seton Hill University is having a designer dress sale on September 11 & 12. The designer dresses were donated from a local bridal store. The dresses are brand new and have never been worn. Ed Meadows announced that the Greensburg Rotary was well represented this weekend. On Friday, Susan McDonald was seen at a table at the YMCA and Gene James with many other Rotary volunteers was seen at SummerSounds. On Saturday, many Rotarians were seen picking up garbage on the side of Route 130.
Thank you to all who participated in the clean-up on Route 130. We will be doing the clean-up again in the fall.
The next Health Screening is scheduled for Saturday, September 25 from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Greensburg Salem Senior High School. Please mark your calendar. See Kevin Metzgar for flyers and more information.

Adib Barsoum introduced our speaker, Jerry Salandro. Jerry Salandro founded IRIS Technologies in 1987. An expert with more than 30 years of experience using video technology to teach students, athletes and professionals, Jerry holds 56 patent claims on video devices used across the country in places like the Pentagon, NASA and Comcast as well as in colleges and high schools from New Hampshire to California. Jerry is a graduate of California University of Pennsylvania and Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he received his Master’s Degree in Education. Jerry has received the Business Person of the Year Award from the Westmoreland Economic Development Corporation, the Distinguished Alumni Award from California University and the Business Ethics Award from American Business Ethics Association. His company was nominated in the top 50 fastest growing companies in Western Pennsylvania.

The Rotary Club picnic will be on August 17. A sign-up sheet is being passed around each week. Please join us for an evening of fun.
A sign-up sheet for the highway cleanup is being passed around. The clean-up will take place on Saturday, August 7 at 8 a.m. Everyone is to meet at the old tennis courts at Greensburg Country Club. The more people the quicker the cleanup.
Westmoreland Rotary is having a kickball fundraiser on Sunday, September 26 at Hempfield Park. Leia Shilobod is putting together a team. The cost is $35 each, which includes food and beverages. The Pittsburgh Steelers game will be fed in via satellite. Spectators are $20 each. For more information, please see Leia.
Flight 93 Memorial Concert will be on September 11 at 7 p.m. at the Greensburg Salem High School presented by Westmoreland County Community College and Symphonic Band, the Jeannette Community Band and the Somerset Community Band. Proceeds raised from this concert will be donated to the Flight 93 Memorial Fund. Businesses and individuals may advertise in the program booklet. John Rusbosin, our guest from the Latrobe Rotary, announced that the annual golf fundraiser for his club will be on Monday, August 9 at the Ligonier Country Club. All proceeds go to maintaining Latrobe Rotary Park and student athlete scholarships. The cost is $125 per person, which includes a noon outdoor bar-b-q and a steak dinner. John Dickson has been awarded a Distinguished Service Award from the PA Association of Homes for Aging. Congratulations John!

Get out and talk about Rotary. Being a Rotarian is a way of life. We accomplish this by being a group. We are the best spokesperson for our club. The best tool we have to get new members is ourselves. Be an ambassador for our Rotary and recruit a new member.

Mike Roberts presented our July birthdays and anniversaries with a sing-along. If you missed his presentation, you missed a lot as was heard by the members present. July is Julius Caesar’s month. He reformed the Roman calendar in 46 BC and in the process, he renamed this month after himself. The history of the birthday cake, why the birthday cake is round, the tradition of putting candles on the birthday cake and traditions and superstitious beliefs related to the birthday cake was explained.
