Did ya Know?
The Rotary Club of Greensburg finished the 02–03 Rotary year as the top
Foundation contributor in District 7330. A total $14,378 made its way from
the club to the Rotary Foundation and will be used in various ways for the
many humanitarian and educational programs. Greensburg, being the largest
club in the district, should be proud of the #one distinction.
The club, however, finished fifth in per capita giving. Due to the generous
giving of several members, per capita giving exceeded $126, and this
represented 40% of the membership making a contribution of at least $100
during the year.
The Foundation Committee thanks you.
Chuck Anderson and Bill Kern
Chuck Anderson advised us that on October 26th, we would receive information about the Rotary Foundation, presented by David Grooner. He will talk to us about the many benefits that our dollars make possible around the world.
Chuck asked that we contact members who we have not seen regularly at weekly meetings and ask them to attend the meeting that day.
THE 84 LUMBER GOLF CLASSIC – a reminder from those who purchased tickets that the event will be held on September 23-26.
A VENETO EXPERIE – The Wine Tasting Evening will be held on October 23rd. Information regarding sponsorship and tickets can be found on the Home Page of the Website. Also, see President Jeff, Tony Martino or Bill McGrath for information. The cost is $100.00 per person. For $250.00, a couple may attend and you can receive an advertisement spot. OUR WEEKLY MEETING’S PROGRAM
The program today was presented by Terry Bengel who spoke about the stained glass project at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg that was recently installed at the Millstein Library.
Terry told us that he has been working for the past thirty-five years in Westmoreland County. He was born and raised in Greensburg and is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg. For the past six years he had planned a project that would become a common symbol of the University. “Upward to the Light”, a 32-foot by 14-foot leaded glass mural, now adorns the Library. This major piece of artwork contains 1,000 pieces of stained glass and weighs 1,200 pounds. Terry said that the piece is treated as a mosaic rather than a typical stained glass work of art due to the need for light to be reflected rather than transmit it. The time necessary to build the project was three months.
An article from the Blue and Gold newsletter of the University of Pittsburgh states:
In the Republic, Plato presents the Allegory of the Cave as a metaphor of ignorance yielding to enlightenment. The Philosopher describes mankind as living shackled in a cave, able to perceive only shadows of the world beyond the cave in dim lift of a fire. When a few members of the group escape, they find a sunlit world glowing with beauty and ideas. The enlightened ones return to the cave to share their newfound vision with those still shackled in darkness, and the metaphor for education is established.”

UPCOMING PROGRAMS
September 14 – Terry Bengel will speak about stained glass and the project at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg
OUR WEEKLY MEETING’S PROGRAM
The program today was presented by Bob Rifenburgh, President and CEO, of St. George Crystal who spoke about glass making in today’s economic time.
St. George Crystal in Jeannette was incorporated in 1985. They purchased a mold shop in 1994 and have added a warehouse facility in 1997. He related to us that 30 tons of lead crystal is made each day, which accounts for 56,000 pieces a day. The cost of lead has increased to the current level of $917.00 a ton, which is over double of its price from last year. In November of this year, the current percentage of the lead in the crystal will drop from 24% to 5 % for their new product called Cyrstaline. This reduction in lead percentage can occur due to the better technology that will allow for the same malleability and refraction that could only have been obtained with the higher lead percentage in the past. Bob said that his company really doesn’t have much competition in the US, Canada, Mexico or South America. The competition is with the European Union due to price subsidies. St. George Crystal currently has 265 full time employees and can employ up to 310 when seasonal employees are added. Bob said that the International Crystal Federation regularly tests for leachability, the transfer of lead from crystal to fluids. It has found that it is very minimal and therefore very safe. Another point was that only 32 pounds of lead is released into the environment each year from the 5 million pounds of lead that is processed each year at the plant. The company’s retail outlet, Jamestown Crystal Outlet, is located off Route 31 in Mt. Pleasant. The outlet sells the products of 18 local manufacturing companies by consignment.
