OUR WEEKLY MEETING

Today's Club Assembly started with a report from Treasurer Mark Barnhart. He advised that although our Club has not had a dues increase recently, meal costs and District dues have increased. The Board will re-examine the situation in January and report to the Club.
Past President Ed Nemainc advised us that the Rotary Clock in the Courthouse Square is being refaced. The clock has weathered since the Club placed it there years ago. The cost of re-facing totaled $3,800.00. (The original cost of the clock was approximately $30,000.00). It should be completed within 30 days.
President Bob Wilson listed the projected Club Goals for this year.
MEMBERSHIP – we should be looking for others that we wish to share the message of Rotary. The goal is to have one new member per month. Please invited a friend to a weekly meeting.
PAUL HARRIS FELLOWS – Members should join a sustaining group. A commitment of $50.00 per quarter ($1,000 total over the five year period) from each of a group of 10 members will allow all to receive a PHF within a five year period (2 being presented each year).
LITERACY PROJECT – Cesare Muccari shares the goal of teaching kids to start reading at an earlier age. The Club, with partnerships with the Greensburg Hempfield Library, the United Way and the Penn State Cooperative Extension can help to achieve this goal. An outreach is planned at the Stanwood Elementary School where Saturday children programs will occur starting in November. Also, the United Way and the Penn State Co-Op will help to identify day care centers that can benefit from reading programs, trips to the library and rotating book collections. It was suggested from the membership that members could help to read to the young kids.
INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS – Carl Rossman spoke about our support of the medical center for the poor in Hout Bay, South Africa. We donated $2,000.00 toward this project and it will receive a matching grant from the District. Carl mentioned that the Rotary Club of Hempfield Township was asked to also contribute. They did in the amount of $250.00. He is still awaiting a response from several other Clubs in the immediate area.
President Elect Jeff Malloy updated us on the CENTENNIAL PROJECT. This is the proposed LED sign that would be located on the overpass of the Five Star Trail on East Pittsburgh Street. It would be used to announce community events. The cost could be up to $30,000.00. (It was noted that one half of the cost has been set aside to date). Announcement fees could be used to any repairs, insurance or replacement costs.
THE WINE TASTING EVENT is our newest fund raising event. It has had great response so far.
SCHOLARSHIPS – The former academic and vocational scholarship committees have merged. They are now titled the Career Assistance Awards. Tony Martino said that a total of $15,000.00 is planned to be distributed this year.
OPERATION SANTA CLAUS – Bill Taylor advised us that 25 to 30 volunteers are needed to pack groceries for this worthwhile project. It will be held on December 10th during the hours of 8 AM and Noon and Noon and 4 PM. Members of the Club and their family members are urged to get involved.
THE MILLER ESTATE (Madeline Nichols Fund) – This trust fund produces between $7,000.00 and $10,000.00 annually. The proceeds are required to be used for community projects. No part of these funds are allowed to be used for our Club's expenses. The application procedure for grant review occurs at the end of the year. Anyone who wishes to submit a request for funds should see Ed Nemanic for an application. The deadline for submission is December 31st.

OUR WEEKLY MEETING

Barbara Breitstein, with the Caring Foundation, spoke to us about the Foundation's goal to provide wellness and better quality of life for children in our community. They are in 49 counties in Western and Central Pennsylvania. They have been in operation since 1985. She told of the three avenues of service that they provide: Preventative Care for all children, CHIPs for uninsured children and The Caring Place that helps grieving youths. Immunizations and other preventative health care measures help to keep children healthy. Through partnerships with schools and day care centers, nearly 300,000 preventative care resources have benefited families in Western PA. Since 1985, more than 180,000 uninsured children have been identified for enrollment in comprehensive health care benefits provided by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. Coverage can be free, low cost or direct pay. Children under 19, who meet family eligibility guidelines can apply. The Tobacco Settlement has also provided funds for an Adult Basic Plan where benefits are provided by Keystone Health Plan West. The Caring Place deals with the devastation to a child caused by the death of a mother, father, brother or sister. Many kids who feel alone in their grief come to the Caring Place, a safe place with safe people, and learn that they are not alone. With support that is age appropriate, they see how the pieces might come together. Barbara mentioned that after a ten week session, a quilt is made to remember and celebrate the life of the person they lost. The Caring Place is located in the former Horne's Building in Pittsburgh.

OUR WEEKLY MEETING

Lawrence Breitstein, Adelphoi Village CEO, spoke to us today about their mission of commitment to the community's kids and families. Through their twenty nine homes and also in-home services, kids from fifty Pennsylvania counties and a few from W. Virginia and New York are counseled so that positive meaningful outcomes are obtained. Kids with troubles are eligible for programs that offer continuum of care. Adelphoi provides a lot of education for these youths. An example is the Ridgeview Academy which is the largest charter school in Westmoreland County. There is also alternative education that is geared toward getting the kids back into the regular classroom setting. Foster care and even adoptions are provided by Adelphoi. Kindership Care is provided for kids who are now living with relatives. There are Day Treatment Programs that allow the kids to go back to their families at night. Secure and more intensive programs, such as lockdown facilities are available if necessary. From this point, the kids work themselves down to where they can get back to their families. A Sex Offenders Program, where kids have committed these offenses are counseled so that they do not repeat these wrongs, is showing a very good success rate. Lawrence mentioned that while the delinquency rate in the state is decreasing overall, unfortunately, the most growing area is with delinquent girls. On any given day, Adelphoi is working with an average of 1,500 kids. Alumni specialists work to bring success stories back to the kids. Some of the original kids from thirty years ago frequently come back to help the kids. Lawrence said that he feels that "there are no bad kids…just kids who have made bad decisions".
