OUR WEEKLY MEETING

District Governor Donna Vesely came to visit and speak to us about how she feels about Rotary and what goals she has for this Rotary year. She opened by commenting that so many Rotarians have an altruistic personality. The qualities of which are empathy, tolerance, a keen sense of justice, spirituality, generosity and confidence. In regard to goals, she went on to mention that every Rotary club is different, therefore, a club's goal could be set in any one of the 4 Avenues of Service that our Club chooses, (Club,Vocational, Community, International). Materials are available to present the 4-Way test to young people in the high schools. There is a community awareness campaign, Rotary Cares, which is a partnership with the Caring Foundation to promote the CHIPS program for children. There is interaction with our youth through Interact and student exchanges. On the international level, there are matching funds available for projects that any club would wish to get involved in and help support financially. There could be financial support to the Polio Eradication Campaign. DG Donna asked for our continued support of the Rotary Foundation. Through the Foundation we are able to make a profound positive difference in the world. She quoted Gandhi "Be the change you wish to see in the world." We can support the Foundation though our commitment to becoming Paul Harris Fellows, becoming Benefactors and also our attendance at the upcoming Foundation Dinner at Nemacolin Woodland on Saturday, November 2nd. She also asked that we seriously consider attending the District Conference that will be held in Gettysburg next spring.

WISE AND OTHERWISE
"People who think it's okay to tell white lies, soon go color blind."

"How come abbreviated is such a long word?"

TODAY’S INVOCATION was given by Tom Hower. "Here we are Jesus. Speak Lord, your servants listen. We are confused, we are poor, we are worried. There are dissentions and difficulties. Speak Jesus, reveal yourself to us as you revealed yourself to St. Paul and many others so that we may become an instrument of your peace. Let us restore faith where there is doubt. Make us instruments of your love, that we may console where there is suffering and affliction, that we may bring unity and love where there is division and hatred, that we may bring hope and confidence where there is despair and sadness. Bless this meal and help us to be ever mindful of the needs of others."

SERGEANT AT ARMS Report - (Bobbi Stemmler-Guest) - We had no Visiting Rotarians. We had three guests of our members: Rebecka Hutchinson was a guest of her father Tom Hower, Peg Wilson was a guest of her husband Bob, and Greg Bisignani (son in law of John Harman) was a guest of Frank Cassell.

Today’s Attendance was 54. This included 51 members and 3 guests.

As announced, the Club will match member contributions up to a total amount of $5,000.00. Ed reported that $5,300.00 was received in pledges and checks. This would make a $10,300.00 total so far. Please contact Dave Delisi before Tuesday's meeting with your pledge or check. A presentation of a check will be made to District Governor Vesley at the luncheon.

FIRESIDE CHAT – October 3rd, at 7:00 p. m. at the Mountain View Inn. It will follow the Board of Directors Meeting that will be at 6:00 p.m. New members will be invited to attend so that they may get information from Board members regarding the workings of Rotary and our Club. OUR WEEKLY MEETING

Chuck Strobel hosted the Birthday Table and wished our 10 members born in September a Happy Birthday.

Autobiographies
Jim Steeley was born in 1939. He was the first of four children. He told of living in a very small house and attending the Mt. Odin Elementary School, which was a three-room schoolhouse. His family moved into a bigger house in Greensburg after the war. He graduated from the Greensburg High School. He attended and graduated from St. Vincent College. He said that "played a little football there". After college he took a teaching job in the Yough School District. He married in 1965 and he and his wife had two children. He is the grandfather of triplets. He held the History Department Chair at the Hempfield Area High School for 25 years. He was the Head Track Coach for 4 or 5 years. He was the founder of a small educational foundation. In 1996 he retired. Unfortunately his wife passed away shortly thereafter. He was asked to serve, temporarily, for three months at the Historical Society. He was then hired to serve as Executive Director, where he has been for the past five years.

Dr. King Hartman was born in Latrobe in 1937. His father had a family practice in Latrobe. He went to W & J University. He then attended Temple Medical School. He interned in Florida. His father advised him to be a specialist. King took a residency at Duke in child psychology. His father then convinced him to go to the Cleveland Clinic in the field of ophthalmology. He was there for four years. Immediately afterwards, he was drafted into the Army. He was a Captain and served a year in Viet Nam. He came to Greensburg and says he loves it here. He and Carol have four kids. All have gone to Washington and Jefferson. (King joked that they may name a wing of the school after him for his monetary tuition contributions). His three sons are physicians and his daughter has made him a grandfather.

WISE AND OTHERWISE
"Fortune knocks but once, but misfortune has much more patience."

"Experience is one thing you can get for nothing."

TODAY’S INVOCATION was given by John Harman. John touched our emotions by telling us of his recent visit to Pearl Harbor where he stood at the memorial where over 1,000 men lost their lives and were not recovered. He spoke about September 11 and a small few who say "that we should just move on". He spoke about an American soldier in Germany, Harry Wilcox, who could not believe how cold and tired he had become, but went on in the pursuit of defending our Country's defense. "Freedom has its blessings…and also its price." We must pause to remember and let us never forget. John thanked the Eternal God, of every race, people and nation for love, family and all the blessings that He has bestowed on us. John reminded us that we must never forget those who have fought for our freedom. He prayed for comfort for the families and friends of those who have been lost and for the police and firefighters who lost their lives in the act of helping and serving others. He asked that we pray for our enemies to learn to live in love and not in hatred.

SERGEANT AT ARMS Report - (John Hanna) - We had no Visiting Rotarians. We had two guests of our members: Theresa Barry was a guest of Mary Clymer and Aya Kamohara (our former foreign exchange student from Japan) was a guest of Jim Harrold.

Today’s Attendance was 59. This included 56 members, our speaker and 2 guests.

MAKE-UPS – Mark Barnhart at the Youngwood/New Stanton Club, Joe Cameron at the Latrobe Club, Morrie Brand at the Ligonier Club and Elinore McMahan at the Hempfield Township Club.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

FALL MULTI-PHASIC BLOOD TESTING will take place on Saturday, September 14th at the "Health Place" at Westmoreland Mall.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION – next week's meeting of September 17th will be held at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg.

MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT – Cathy Daversa is encouraging every member to seek out potential new members to share in Rotary with our Club. Please contact her if you would like any assistance in the explanation of the ideals of Rotary to the potential new member or information about the proposal process.

POLIO ERADICATION FUND DRIVE – Dave Delisi announced that there has been an outstanding response by many members who are contributing to this worthwhile mission. As announced, the Club will match member contributions up to a total amount of $5,000.00. A letter requesting your financial commitment has been sent. Let's show the District and the world that we do care.

SARGEANT AT ARMS SIGN UP – John Hanna will be looking for a few good men and women to serve at the registration table. New members are doing what they can to handle the duties, however, there is a need for some longer time members (notice that I didn't say old timers) to also serve, again. Please volunteer for a week or two.

TRIPLETS, TRIPLETS, TRIPLETS – Congratulations to Dave and Colleen Robinson on the birth of their 3 sons. I am told that all are doing fine.

September 24, A visit from the District Governor

OUR WEEKLY MEETING
.
Our speaker today was Alex Graziani, Executive Director of Smart Growth Partnership of Westmoreland County. Smart Growth is a private community land-use advocacy group that deals with growth and quality of life issues. The organization is based at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg. The SGPWC is thought to be unique in Pennsylvania, which recently passed land use legislation to encourage more cooperative comprehensive land use decision making among state, county and municipal planners. The group plans to involve business leaders, conservation agencies, developers and others with local and state planners in crafting the most intelligent long-term land use plan to benefit everyone. "Helping to build healthy, safe and livable communities" is the goal. Important issues discussed were: sprawl, open spaces loss, loss of farmland, traffic congestion, community health, population decline and community safety. Alex spoke about the movement from cities and boroughs to the surrounding suburban townships. He stresses the need to avoid wasteful use of the land. He talked about the advantages to use mixed land use where working , shopping and playing could happen in the same area, rather than having to commute to separate and distinct areas. He encouraged the design of walk able neighborhoods, distinctive and attractive buildings, preservation of open spaces, a variety of transportation choices and community involvement. He asked that we consider attending the Smart Growth Conference at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg on Friday, September 27th, 8:30 a.m to 4:00 p.m. The registration cost is $15.00 and includes lunch. For additional information; call (724) 836-7048.
