Some Thoughts for the Day
“One of God’s greatest miracles is a faithful friend.” Wilson
“We have to pay dearly to get rid of our errors and even then we are lucky.” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
“Modern diplomats approach every problem with an open mouth.” Arthur Goldberg
PROGRAM FOR TODAY introduced by Dave Robinson
RESOLUTION TO HONOR DR. KENNTH P. RUTTER was presented by Bob Wilson on behalf of the Board and Committee. Written by James Boggs, it reads: “For a lifetime of unparalleled service to his fellow man through his Church and various service clubs and organizations throughout the community, Westmoreland County, the region, the state, and beyond; For his unselfish commitment to provide aid and comfort as well as wise and timely spiritual counsel to the poor, underprivileged, disengaged and disenfranchised; For the fine example that he continues to set for us all as a role model; For his unquestionable devotion to his Lord and Savior; For his servant leadership; For his decades of service to Rotary International and to the Rotary Club of Greensburg; For his outright personification of the very ideals of Rotary International and what it means to be a Rotarian; For the way he has lived the Four Way Test of Rotary: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build good will and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? And for the tremendous and lasting difference that he has made in each of our lives, it is hereby RESOLVED on this 3rd day of October, 2005 that the Rotary Club of Greensburg shall honor and pay tribute to Kenneth P. Rutter by proudly creating, establishing, and dedicating the DR. KENNETH P. RUTTER MINISTERIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD. /s/ Cathy A. Baumann
Bob also noted that the committee has been working for three months on this recognition and award; the date set for the dinner is May 3, 2006; the place is yet to be determined. It will be funded by contributions from those attending the dinner and others who wish to honor Dr. Rutter in this fashion. A program will list those contributing to the scholarship fund over and beyond the cost of the dinner. Invitations will go out as soon as all the arrangements are in hand. We need help in establishing the list for those receiving the invitations. If you would like to work on this with us, we would be glad to have your help. We hope to have information out before the end of the year, so that those who would like to give before the end of the year may do so.
BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS: DARRIN SHAFFER led us in the birthday celebration for the following Rotarians: Mehta Hitesh, Kevin Metsger, Joe Biss, Ken Rutter, Erik Hallquist, Jeff Long, Debbie Hepler. Also we celebrated the Rotary Membership Anniversary date for Cesare Muccari, Eric Bononi, Michelle Bononi, Kris Agarwal, Pete Cecconi, Bill Courtney! And in our wonderful choral rendition, we harmonized (is that the word I want?) our greetings to the celebrants. Good job, Darrin!
MINI AUTOBIOGRAPHY BY DR. BILL McGRATH was the third part of the program. Among many interesting facts/fiction that he gave us, we learned that he was not terrific in football, but that he was the all state third baseman in baseball for N.J. during his high school senior year! We are so glad he found his way to Western Pennsylvania – and his genes are going to keep him here for a long while yet!
INVOCATION was given today by REBECKA HUTCHINSON
SGT. AT ARMS REPORT by DENNIS CREMONESE indicated that we had 55 Rotarians in Attendance, no visitors. Jorge and Julie –our exchange students were in attendance. We are so fortunate to have them with us!
NOTATIONS GIVEN BY PRESIDENT ELECT MARY CLYMER included the fact that the board was to meet briefly at the conclusion of our meeting today; Last week’s survey for meeting place brought a close response for both 4 Points and UPG. THEREFORE, A MEETING HAS BEEN SCHEDULED FOR UPG on NOV. 8 that we might experience what they have to offer, and see the parking availability. This has been confirmed after our meeting.
CHRISTMAS PARTY is scheduled for Dec. 13 at 6 p.m. at Mt. View. We will be receiving invitations, and our RSVP is needed by Dec. 1!
FOOD BANK COLLECTION FOR TURKEYS which was requested by our District Governor Colleen Wood, is being taken seriously by our club. We passed a donation basket around this week, and it looked like a good response. It will make its way around next week as well so if you didn’t have an opportunity to give this week – you can dig deep next week. Will it make be beneficial to all concerned? Will it build good will and better friendships?
SPEAKERS’ COMMITTEE meets Oct. 26 6 p.m. at Carl Rossman’s home. CHRIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH acknowledged our gift in memory of Marion Cary, wife of Bob Cary.
KATY DORAN brought to the club’s attention that Jorge wanted to learn to play the guitar. 2 problems: 1) A guitar is needed and (2) he needs someone to give him instruction on how to play. IF you can help with either of these, please call Katy. Katy also reminded us that we need to get to know this great guy in our midst – and urged us to call to share an activity with him. This is a great opportunity for all of us. (Actually, it also goes for Julie as well.)
FOUNDATION DINNER DEADLINE – is upon us. Chuck Anderson once again lifted up the need for us to be a part of this great celebration. IT is Sat. Nov. 12 - there were sign up sheets on the tables, or call Chuck. Some call him Bishop, but you can call him Chuck on the phone. He’ll get the message.

Some Thoughts for the Day
From Mother Teresa: “I am a little pencil in the hands of a writing God who is sending a love letter to the world.”

“As long as we are lucky we attribute it to our smartness; our bad luck we give the gods credit for.” Josh Billings
ROTARY ALERT: NEXT WEEK, OCT. 25 WE ARE BACK HOME AT THE FOUR POINTS!
PROGRAM FOR TODAY was our District Governor Colleen Wood. She came with a mighty challenge for Rotarians not only in our district, but around the world. But for us the message was clear: To look to the future we need to start with the children. 1. Literacy – she praised our part in the district’s goal of providing dictionaries to third grade children. We will be giving 700 dictionaries to the local school districts. 2. Hunger – 1 in 6 children goes to bed hungry here. She challenged us to not only contribute to the local food banks, but to give them some of our time and physical help. 3. Water – noting that every 8 seconds a child dies because of the water they drink, she asks that we purchase a sand filter costing $60. to help purify the water for some child.
Outlining a dream for the future with no polio, clean water, elimination of poverty, and peace for the world, she believes that Rotary can be a key player in each of these areas. Her speech detailed some of the Rotary responses. Thank you, Colleen!
ATTENDANCE REPORT by Dr. Bill McGrath was 61 members present, Visiting Rotarians: Tim Dingham from Latrobe, Jim Bassett from Murrysville, PDG George Wood from Mt. Pleasant; and DG Colleen Wood from Youngwood/New Stanton . Other guests: Janet McNeel (Dick McNeel); Geno Ray from Seton Hill (Bob Bloom)
3 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM GREENSBURG SALEM were hosted by Rebecka Hutchinson. Make sure you greet these youth after our meetings. Let them know that we enjoy having them with us. The applause at the end of their speeches help, but they need the personal touch. Try it~!
JEFF MALLOY RECEIVES A PRESIDENTIAL AWARD. Presented by District Governor Colleen Wood on behalf of the President of Rotary International, it recognized the achievement of this club for Jeff’s year as President! Congratulations, Jeff!

Reception following in the Parking Area. Chri s Rizk urged us to attend. IT is a privilege to host this event!
THE ROTARY FOUNDATION DINNER reservation deadline is coming upon us. Bill Kern once again brought home the point of how important it is that we participate. The dinner this year will be held at the Mon Valley Hospital Health Plex, Belle Vernon. $150./Rotarian - $100 of which may be your contribution to the foundation, if you have given the cost is only $50. Bill wants desperately for us to have a better representation. How about it? Forms on our website.

“To say I always look my best can only mean the worst.” T.S. Eliot
ROTARY ALERT: NEXT WEEK, OCT. 18 - WE MEET AT THE GARDEN & CIVIC CENTER
OCTOBER 11 NOTES
PROGRAM FOR TODAY continued the Rotary emphasis on literacy. Beth Cassell presented an overview of a book, #1 Ladies Detective Agency
and brought us to her conclusion that fiction can often help us understand and explore real life situations better than biography or non fiction writing. It was a very worthwhile presentation. You can find that book (CD as well) in our Greensburg Hempfield Library.
ATTENDANCE REPORT by Dennis Cremonese had 53 members present, Visiting Rotarian June Tommenvilla from the Braddock Club; guests: Janet McNeel, Alex Lima’s guest Joe Trimarchi, and our exchange students Jorge and Julie!
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM HEMPFIELD were brought by Rick Nedley, and Kerri Holsopple, Michele Angelo, and David Hollohan shared their plans with us! They were reminded that scholarship applications were available from Rotary.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
PRESIDENT CATHY reminded those who had signed up for a Latrobe Club visitation, that it was scheduled for tomorrow, Oct. 12. Next week we will meet at the Garden and Civic Center, and the board is to meet with the District Governor. The board will meet briefly after the 4-way test today.
BILL KERN spoke about the Foundation Dinner (see Coming Events listed below) and urged that all of our members make a special effort to attend. He stood at the door as we left the meeting and handed out information on the event.
REBECKA HUTCHINSON noted that she had started a sign up sheet around for helping Operation Santa Claus (Robin Acton, coordinator) the date will be Saturday, Nov. 5 at the SuperValue Warehouse in New Stanton. If you did not get to sign up, please contact Robin.
BILL McGRATH had two announcements: 1) Invocations for the rest of the month, Will Brown on Oct. 18; and Rebecka Hutchinson on Oct. 25. and 2) THE WINE TASTING EVENT FOR THE CLUB HAS BEEN CANCELLED due to lack of support. We need some good ideas – note the accent on good as opposed to some of the suggestions from the floor –for money raisers to offset the six to eight thousand dollars the wine tasting event brought in.
DICK McNEEL reported to the club the findings from the task force looking into meeting places for the club. Four options were given: Mt. View with a meal cost of $11.70; Greensburg Country Club with a meal cost of $9.25; UPG with a meal cost of $8.25; and the Sheraton with a meal cost of $10.75. Other factors were also considered- menu, parking, etc. IT was also suggested that we visit each of the places before deciding. A straw v ote was taken with the Sheraton and UPG getting the most support of those present. I am sure we will hear more about this issue in the coming weeks.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION TO REVEREND KENNETH P. RUTTER by Judge Driscoll
================================================================
Reverend Kenneth P. Rutter, JUVENILE JUSTICE AWARD FOR EXTRAORDINARY SERVICE
AND NOW, September 15, 2005, the Court of Common Pleas and the Westmoreland County Commissioners hereby establish the Reverend Kenneth P. Rutter Juvenile Justice Award for Extraordinary Service.
This award is to be given from time to time to recognize sustained, devoted and significant volunteer contribution to youth and families.
The award is named for Reverend Kenneth P. Rutter because of the extraordinary service he himself has given. Despite his very busy career as a minister and a civic life that left little unused time, he became a founding member of the Greensburg Youth Commission and has served for over 40 years. He has been instrumental to the success of the Westmoreland County Youth Commission and has assisted many young persons during the difficult years of adolescence.
Reverend Rutter has been one of our county’s most civic-minded citizens, one who has contributed immeasurably to his community through service to Rotary, the Westmoreland Chamber of Commerce, the Annual Prayer Breakfast, Go Greensburg Community Development Corporation, the Westmoreland Manor All-Faiths Chapel Building Committee, the Salvation Army, the Greensburg Ministerium, Children’s Bureau Advisory Board, Westmoreland Mental Health Association, the Westmoreland Hospital Foundation and as Trustee of the Westmoreland Regional Hospital.
Signed: Commissioner Tom Balya, Commissioner Thomas Ceraso, Commissioner Phil Light, Daniel J. Ackerman, President Judge; John J. Driscoll, Administrative Judge of the Juvenile Court.
OCTOBER 4 NOTES
DAVID ROBINSON DID THE IMPOSSIBLE TODAY: He and 3 Judges spoke, and we were finished within our allotted time! Amazing – as was the program. It was good to meet, hear, and see 3 judges in action. Judge Caruso, Civil Court; Judge Bahlovec, Criminal Court; Judge Driscoll, Family Court, spoke of their particular responsibilities. IT was a good program not to miss. Before presenting the judges, Dave gave us a 101 lesson about the Importance of Retention of judges. He did it in short order, which made Judge Bahlovic’s remark all the more stellar that “Dave might take an hour to say ‘ Good Morning.”
WELL DONE, DAVID!
ATTENDANCE REPORT by Dr. Bill McGrath had 53 Rotarians attending; Guests included: Rotarian Ed Campbell from Sun City West, AZ; Rotarian Dan Obara from Norwin; James Bassett from Murrysville. The absent Tom Jachimowicz hosted Dr. Stepen Ender; Sue McFarland brought Capt. Lawrence Shurtless; Bob Bloom introduced his wife, Kim; Bob Wilson was lucky to have his wife Peg there. Jorge Garcia our exchange student was also in attendance.
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM GREENSBURG CENTRAL CATHOLIC were brought by Rebecka Hutchinson,, and shared their plans with us! What a joy it is to hear them.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
OUR PRES. CATHY, true to her word, had the second installment of September Birthdays, reading the names of the birthday celebrants, and in one great melodious sound we wished them all “Happy Birthday.” (Believe the melodious and I’ll sell you the Court House!) We also recognized the September Anniversaries of Membership. Incidentally, if you don’t invite someone to be a Rotarian, they can never celebrate that event with us. Do it this week! She also announced the BOARD MEETING FOR THIS THURSDAY AT U.P. GREENSBURG. Reminded us that OCTOBER 18 MEETING will be at the GREENSBURG GARDEN AND CIVIC CENTER. IT seems that a Clip Board with the invocations on it has not made it back to Joe Peluso or Cathy. If you have any idea where it wandered off to, please return it. Otherwise ---!
