It was quite obvious that the area and its people have and will benefit greatly from the medical supplies that we were able to help transport.

THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS NOMINEE COMMITTEE is looking to speak with any member who is interested in being considered for a directorship in the Club. If you have interest, please see President Jeff or any current director within the next several weeks. The new Rotary Year will start July 2005.

OUR WEEKLY MEETING’S PROGRAM

The program today was presented by David Groner. David is a Past District Governor and is a Vice Chair for the Polio Eradication Program. He is a funeral director and ordained minister. He and his wife, Barbara, who is also a Rotarian, hail from Michigan.
Dave spoke to us about the teams that he has led to India and Africa to immunize children against polio. On one particular visit to India, he told the story of how Rotary’s 58-member volunteer team was able to get two diverse groups of people to work with one another for the common goal of immunizing all the children of the area. Members of the local Catholic Church who had been trained in the procedure by Rotarians immunized members of the surrounding community. This was despite religious and culture differences. The goodwill shown to the locals was reciprocated when a member of the church needed help.
In Africa, Dave and his team was able to immunize many against polio and also provide tetanus shots and provide a birthing center to improve the quality of care for women and babies. The goal was to have no polio or lock jaw cases for one year. The goal was met! It was not easy though. Each house in each village and on 32 small islands in the area where visited.
In several weeks, Dave will return to our Club. From here he will leave on another mission where he will join a team going to Africa to immunize 80 million kids in 20 countries in 3 weeks time.

Please consider donating a one-time amount of $100.00 or more to the Rotary Foundation. Attend the Foundation Dinner. Become a Paul Harris Fellow by donating an amount of $1,000.00. Consider joining a Paul Harris Fellow Sustaining Group by committing to $50.00 per quarter and you’ll receive, or be able to assign a PHF to whom you chose, within five years.
Dave said that the District is $2,500 behind in its goal. Maybe we could, or better yet should, help obtain the goal.
Please see President Jeff, Bill Kern, Mark Barnhart, Cesare Muccari, Dick McNeel or any Board member for contribution information. THANKS.

OUR WEEKLY MEETING’S PROGRAM

The program today was presented by Ken McGowan, President of Westmoreland Advanced Materials. He opened the business 2002 in Arnold, PA. They are located in the original Alcoa manufacturing facility. The company manufactures high quality refractory products for high temperature processes. Their products include dry mixes, gun mixes, patches and mortars. These products are used in furnaces, ovens and boilers that process minerals, melt wax or melt steel, aluminum or brass. The products raise the thermal conductivity to improve heat transfer and also protection from metal penetration and corrosive mineral build up in the containers that hold molten steel, aluminum or brass.
A second company, Westmoreland Advanced Material Bio Ceramics was opened in 2004. They are currently operating only in R&D. Some aspects of their work are in stem cell based research (adult not embryonic) that deals with nerves, muscle and bones. Bone and tissue implants are what is being strived for. They work with Duquesne University and Carnegie Mellon.
Both companies work with aerospace companies, defense contractors, the US Government and the healthcare industry.
You can visit their website at www.westadmat.biz
