OUR WEEKLY MEETING

David Leuthold from the Premier Institute for Financial Freedom, spoke today on “Credit Health”. He described the typical middle class American as one who carries a little too much debt and not enough savings. He stated that the average family carries between 12 and 16 credit cards. He said that “making more money is not always the answer – attitude is the answer” in attempting to straighten out from an over extended situation. Unless spending habits and sound financial planning are established, even those who work more to increase their income to attempt to reduce debt, many will still fall back into the same situation. David noted that Americans used $700 billion of home equity recently, of which, he anticipates that one half was used to pay off credit card debt. Many experts expect many of those people will get back into a large credit card situation. David recommends getting rid of all but one or two credit cards; using them for emergencies, ability to rent cars, etc. Paying off the card within one to two billing cycles. Think of a new financial strategy. David says pay off the smallest debt; continue to apply the amount you were paying on that debt (in addition to your regular payment on that debt) to the now smallest debt. The systematic and compounding affect works wonders. David has workshop presentations for businesses, church groups and other associations. He can be reached at info@pifff.org or 724-861-5468.

WISE AND OTHERWISE
Thoughts are like roads; you never know where they lead you.

Daring to dream is daring to live.

TODAY’S INVOCATION was given by Rick Nedley. “Today I will live one day only, and not try to solve the whole problem of life at once. Today I will be unafraid of life and death, but enjoy the beautiful and be happy. Today I will have a plan even though I may not follow it exactly. It will save me from worry, hurry and indecision. Today I will look about with fresh eyes and discover that I can get out of life all that I put into it. Today I will find a little time to relax and to think about God. Today is yours. God has given it to you. All your yesterdays He has taken back. All your tomorrows He’s holding out of your reach. Only today is yours. Use it so that at its close you can say, I have lived and loved today”

OUR WEEKLY MEETING

Bharat Jain, MD, Medical Director of the Westmoreland Sleep Disorders Center spoke today about Sleep Apnea. He oversees a four-bed unit at Westmoreland Regional Hospital and a four-bed unit at Frick Hospital. He defined sleep apnea as the quitting of breathing while sleeping due to obstruction or collapse of the upper airway. The body panics and patients wake up or are at a light sleep level rather than a deep sleep. The quality of sleep is affected although the quantity of sleep seems normal. Also, when the panic occurs, blood pressure can rise which can ultimately lead to heart disease or stroke. Other effects of apnea are drowsy driving, sleeplessness, fatigue, personality changes and early morning headaches. Dr. Jain cited clinical risk factors such as obesity, a larger neck circumference, genetics and age. The disorder is prevalent in 18 million people and affects 4% of men and 2% of women….the majority of which remain undiagnosed. Snoring, chocking, the quitting of breathing, periodic leg movements are serious indicators of sleep apnea. With children, additionally there can be a failure to thrive and even bed-wetting. Sleep studies are critical to evaluate patients. Life style medications such as losing weight, limited alcohol consumption and evaluation of sleep positions can help. Surgeries have some limited benefits.

OUR WEEKLY MEETING

Cheri McShea, Program Director, Dean Ornish Program, spoke to us about Reversing Heart Disease. She first stated that the program started about 20 years ago on the West Coast. The Program is located in the Westmoreland Regional Hospital at The Well Being Center. Cheri stated that coronary artery disease is the number one killer in the US. She said that 90% is attributed to life style while 10% is attributed to genetics. She stresses that a life style change is a must. There are four components to the program. Exercise - physiologists instruct participants to develop regular patterns of exercise that leads to improved cardiovascular fitness. Stress Management - processes help to reduce the unnecessary pressures of daily life that can lead to unhealthy changes in blood pressure and heart rate. Group Support - through regular meetings that improve the communication between other participants who aspire the same results from the program. Nutrition – participants follow a low fat, whole foods nutrition plan that emphasizes whole grains, fresh vegetables and fruits. No meat, fish or chicken is in the diet. A member of the program, David Dye, spoke to us of the benefits that have resulted in his using the Dean Ornish Program. For him, stress management was the most important…diet was not a problem. The phone number for information is 724-832-3573.
