A Flash from the Past

Rotary FLASH of 11-2-2005
THE FLASH of The Rotary Club of Greensburg for November 22, 2005

Things To Remember
“A single grateful thought toward heaven is the most complete prayer.” Gotthold Lessing
“THANKSGIVING: We thank thee Father, for the care That did not come to try us;
The burden that we did not bear, The trouble that passed by us; The task we did not fail to do,
The hurt we did not cherish; The friend who did not prove untrue, The joy that did not perish.
We thank thee for the blinding storm That did not lose its swelling; And for the sudden blight of harm,
That came not nigh our dwelling. We thank thee for the dart unsped, The bitter word unspoken,
The grave unmade, the tear unshed, The heart-tie still unbroken.” Anon.

PROGRAM FOR TODAY was a very interesting presentation by our own Doug Ramm on the “Formula for Happiness”. Speaking from his own experiences as a psychologist, Doug relayed to us a bit of history, some observations of our current situation as regards happiness, and the foundation that is needed. The foundation of faith makes a difference, and it needs to interact with the schools and family. He gave us a warning about the marginalization of the Judeo/Christian religion in our society. Thank you, Doug – good insights into our dilemma.
INVOCATION was given today by DR. RICHARD McNEEL.
Sergeant at Arms Report: Dr. Bill McGrath reported that 57 Greensburg Rotarians in attendance; plus Visiting Rotarians: Tim Dingman from Latrobe, Tim Henry from Hempfield, and Brian Beeghly from Rockwood; guests: Matt Rossman, son of Carl; Jessica Tanase guest of Bob Bloom; and our Exchange Student, Jorge Garcia. We also had 3 students from Greensburg Central Catholic brought to us by Chuck Anderson.
PRESIDENT CATHY announced that there would be a short Board meeting following the 4 Way Test; and she had a special Thank You to Mary Clymer for presiding over our meetings the last two weeks while she was moving and settling in her new abode.
NOMINATIONS FOR OUR CLUB’S BOARD were declared closed by Carl Rossman. Those nominated were: Chuck Anderson, John Kline, Alex Lima, Mike Lucotch, Dick McNeel, Anne Peagler. The election of four members to the Board of Directors will occur during next Tuesday’s membership meeting. Their two-year terms will start in July 2006 and they will be seated during Mary Clymer’s and then Carl Rossman’s presidential terms.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SERVICE were listed by several of our members. Sue McFarland reminded us that there is a need for volunteers for OPERATION SANTA CLAUS on Dec. 5 (A.M. – need those able to do physical work of unloading trucks) The afternoon will be normal packing of groceries and books;

QUERY ???????? Why did Gene James get his picture in the Trib for having lunch? He wouldn’t confess, so call him and ask him. Might be interesting to hear what he has to say. Also Cathy noted that Chuck Anderson had his photo in this past week. “At least it was in the good section of the paper!” was her only comment.
TO THOSE WHO STEPPED FORWARD WITH GUITAR OFFERS FOR JORGE – MANY THANX! You will all understand that the Grand Prize for Rotarian generosity, however, must go to Chuck and Nancy Anderson for the outright GIFT of an acoustic guitar and case! Please encourage Jorge to make the most of the opportunity to demonstrate his new musical skills before he leaves us.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS – The weekly meeting, held 2 weeks from now, on December 6th will be at the Greensburg Country Club. This will give us an opportunity to sample this location as a possible change of venue for our weekly meetings.

Rotary FLASH of 11-15-2005
THE FLASH of The Rotary Club of Greensburg for November 15, 2005

Things To Remember
“I am a citizen of the world.” Diogenes
“What we do not understand, we do not possess.” Goethe”
“Wanting to work is so rare a want that it should be encouraged.” Abraham Lincoln
PROGRAM FOR TODAY was a very interesting double feature: First, we had Rotarian Kevin Metsger give a presentation of “Oral Hygiene” and an altogether too short insight into the improvements in dentistry. What difference from the old techniques! Then we had Mark Barnhart present the supervisor of the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies – for veterans and their spouses. You just had to be there for the play on words during the presentation, and some afterward by Mr. Barnhart…putting them down on paper just doesn’t make it!
INVOCATION was given today by RICH ROSKY.
Sergeant at Arms Report: 61 Greensburg Rotarians in attendance; plus Visiting Rotarian, Chris Couch from Latrobe, guests that included Ed Meadows’ wife, Sue; Kevin Metsger’s wife, Linley; Ann Peagler had a guest, Jim Yumin; and our terrific exchange students, Jorge and Julie. Jack Moldovan was the driver for our students from Hempfield, and he brought three engaging young ladies, Jackie, Melissa, and Crystal. The accomplishments and dreams of these youth are worth our listening intently.
PRESIDING TODAY WAS PRESIDENT ELECT MARY CLYMER in absence of our fearless leader, Cathy Baumann.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR SERVICE were listed by several of our members. Carl Rossman reminded us that NOMINATIONS FOR OUR BOARD are open this week and next; the ballot will be put together after our meeting next week and we will vote the following Tuesday. If you care to volunteer, and we hope you will, contact Carl Rossman, Jeff Malloy, or Chuck Anderson. It is a two year commitment. Then, Carl called 5 students up to the podium to give their impressions of participation in the World Affairs Institute. The subject was Iran. Nick, Elliot, Amanda, Jorge, and Julie – all thanked us for giving them the opportunity to participate. They spoke about learning the problems inherent in the situation, the history of the country, and our exchange students were really surprised what American youth thought about the situation there and our involvement in it. It was a mind opening experience for all involved! Rotary made it possible!
Mike Lucotch – reminded us there is still time and space to be a part of the SALVATION ARMY KETTLE BELLS for the Christmas Season. We have Dec. 16th from 9 to 9 in front of Kaufmann’s and PENNY’S as well. Call Mile or sign the sheet!
OPERATION SANTA CLAUS sign up sheet was emphasized by Rebecka Hutchinson. Need volunteers for Dec. 5, 6, and 8! Good opportunity to serve our community together with others. It is a big job, but not only is it worth it, you have good fun doing it!
OPERATION MEAT BALL – Dick McNeel was told by his wife to invite us for this event tomorrow at the cost of $6. benefits the Red Cross! Call Dick for the location – I didn’t hear it!
ROTARY RECOGNITION for being #2 in our District for the Annual Fund was presented to the club by Jeff Malloy. He received it at the Foundation Dinner last week. They had 300 in attendance, and a great time!
DRIVERS NEEDED FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS to attend our Rotary Meetings. Please sign up or call John Sproull. 724-836-2600

Rotary FLASH of 11-08-2005
THE FLASH of The Rotary Club of Greensburg for November 8, 2005

Things To Remember
“You can easily judge the character of a person by how they treat those who can do nothing for them.” Anon.
“He who has a thousand friends has not one friend to spare, And he who has one enemy will meet him everywhere. R.W. Emerson
“A politician thinks of the next election; a statesman, of the next generation.” James Freeman Clarke
“REMEMBER NEXT WEEK’S ROTARY MEETING WILL BE AT THE SHERATON!” We thank UPG for their hosting our club today; as usual, they did an outstanding job for us. They have a way of doing that!
OUR NEWEST MEMBER: Thomas Jachimowicz presented Steven C. Ender, Ed.D. for membership in the Rotary Club of Greensburg. Dr. Ender is the new President of Westmoreland Community College. We welcome him into our midst and look forward to working with him.
PROGRAM FOR TODAY introduced by Tony Martino– Terry Brino Dean, Director of the Seton Hill Theater. His presentation was dynamic and interesting. Using the famous speech “To Be or Not to Be – that is the question, he reminded us of the dynamic of reading in depth, and the importance of imagination in our lives, and the life of the world. Thank you Terry - and we look forward to seeing some of his students in drama. Mary Clymer suggested that she send some of us to him for instruction…including Mark B.
INVOCATION was given today by MIKE LUCOTCH.
WE DID IT! THE BEST ATTENDANCE YET! – Now to get Mark some antacids. Bill McGrath told us that we had 62 members in attendance. It was great to have to make some room at our tables. We also had a few guests, The Bloom Boys had their wives as guests: Isie and Kim; Don Waxter had Frank Mondello as a guest; Chuck Anderson invited Mike Monsour. And we were privileged to have Dorothy Ruoff as a guest of the club. Also present were both of our exchange students, Jorge and Julie! Bill Taylor was the student driver of the week and brought us 3 students from Greensburg Salem High School.
SPECIAL MEMORIAL FLAG was presented to the club in memory of Ken Ruoff and Joe Burkley by Mark Barnhart, John Wesner, and Jack Moldovan.
It was especially appropriate because both of these men served in the armed forces, and Veteran’s day is almost upon us. Thank you!
HOW ABOUT DOING YOURSELF A FAVOR? Plan an event that you can invite one of our exchange students to be your guest, and learn to enjoy their company, and let them experience your understanding of being a friend. You know, for as much as we do as Rotarians, this is one area that ought to be on our conscience. We invite these students as our guests, and then forget to be good hosts. Only Mark Barnhart has done it this year! Now you can’t let Mark get ahead of you –can you? Call Katy and make a date. Another question: DID ANY ONE FIND A GUITAR FOR JORGE? See if you have one he could borrow while he is here. He has one at home, but would like to practice…Look deeeeep fellow Rotarians~!
IT WAS MOVING DAY FOR CATHY, AND SO we were privileged to have President Elect Mary Clymer at the helm today. Mary shared a note from a student who had received a dictionary that thanked our Rotary Club for the dictionary. Among other thoughts the student said that she had already looked up the longest word in the world – and the longest number. Thank you, Rotary! By the way, do you know what they are?
OPPORTUNITIES FOR SERVICE were listed by several of our members. Chuck Anderson for the nominating committee is looking for volunteers for serving on the Board for 2006-2008. Please see him if you are interested.
Mike Lucotch – reminded us that it is time to sign up for SALVATION ARMY KETTLE BELLS for the Christmas Season. We have Dec. 16th from 9 to 9 in front of Kaufmann’s (while it still remains Kaufmann’s). The shift will be for just 2 hours each. If we get ample volunteers, there is a possibility that we could add the entrance to PENNEY’S as well. Call Mike or sign the sheet!
Ed Nemanic sent a card around for us to sign for Ed Meadow’s wife, Sue. Ed tells us that Sue is doing well despite the fact that she has been married to him for 37 years this month! Can you imagine it? He asked. Well, can you?
Sue McFarland and Rebecka Hutchinson thanked those who HELPED OPERATION SANTA CLAUS by packing stockings last Saturday. Our Rotarians along with several other organizations packed 10,000. stockings! Good job! They hasten to remind us that in December, they will be needing more help for packing 10,000 bags of groceries. They have some jobs requiring physical dexterity along with the assembly line needs. So there is room for all! Sign up or call Rebecka.
Chris Rizk reminded us that FIDDLER ON THE ROOF would be playing at the Palace this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
PE Mary asked us to respond quickly for the Christmas Party – invitations will be going out soon. She assures us that Robin Acton and Sue McFarland have a wonderful event planned for us.

Please notify the secretary in writing of any reason why he should not be admitted to our club by Monday, Nov.7.
PROGRAM FOR TODAY introduced by Bill Kern – Past District Governor Bob Arbuckle, member of the Rotary Club of New Kensington in District 7300. He became a Rotarian in 1975, president of his club in 1982. Under his leadership his club was designated as the most outstanding club in his district. Numerous positions beyond the district level include: North America Committee, membership development committee, nominating committee for RI Director, and represented the President of RI at district conferences. Since this is the first day of Rotary’s foundation month, it is most appropriate that we hear about our foundation. His message centered around the theme “Why am I in Rotary?” To make a difference, and he illustrated the difference Rotary is making in the world especially through the Polio Eradication Drive. It was a very moving presentation. Thank you, PDG Bob Arbuckle
INVOCATION was given today by TOM HEADLEY
SGT. AT ARMS REPORT by DENNIS CREMONESE indicated that we had 52 Rotarians in Attendance. Visitors included Joyce Rossman, wife of Carl; and Jorge, our student from Ecuador.
NOTATIONS GIVEN BY PRESIDENT CATHY BAUMANN included the fact that the board was to meet briefly at the conclusion of our meeting today; The Rutter Scholarship Committee meeting after the 4 way test; *Following Cathy’s announcement about our meeting at UPG, Carl Rossman indicated that he will email directions to all members who have email capability. Then he went on to tell us to enter at the Main Entrance, keep in left lane and find parking if possible in front of Smith Hall. The meeting will be in the Hempfield Room of Chambers Hall. If you cannot find parking in front of Smith hall, go around Smith Hall, look for parking in one of the lots there. You may enter Chambers Hall by the back door which will be on the 2nd level, and you will need to come down to the first level for the Hempfield Room. This was all spoken like a true college spokesman
DR. BILL McGRATH listed the invocations for the coming months: Nov. 1 – Tom Headley ; Nov. 8 – Mike Lucotch; Nov. 15 – Bill McGrath; Nov. 22 – Dick McNeel; Nov. 29 – Katy Doran. Dec. 6 – Bill Kern; Dec. 13 – Christmas Party ; Dec. 20 – Rich Rosky; Dec. 27- Mark Barnhart!
Bill also reminded us of our opportunity to bring our membership back to its former glory of 140 members or so. We currently have 106 members in the club. This is the season of giving – why not give a friend the opportunity to join in the fellowship and purpose of Rotary through our club? If you like them, why not invite them?
ROBIN ACTON reminded us to be at the Super Value Warehouse in New Stanton THIS SATURDAY at 8:00 a.m. to pack stockings for Operation Santa;
On Dec. 5, 6, & 8 We can pack Groceries for O.S. as well. She needs some special muscular help on the 5th for unloading/loading the trucks.
DAVE ROBINSON placed sample Voting Ballots on the tables that we might be aware of the voting opportunities before us next Tuesday.
SYMPATHY CARD for the Delisi family was signed. David’s mother-in-law passed away.
“PRES.” Cathy shared with us the delightful time she had last week in handing out dictionaries to the third graders in several of our schools. Mary Clymer also shared in that task. Cathy’s face lit up as she told about the comments of the kids, and their questions. Among others, they asked, “How did the Rotary pay for all this?” How do you join Rotary?” “How long have you been a Rotarian?” “What do you get from it?” “Why do you do that?” “How old are you?” Cathy and Mary got the “Key” to the school, plus a lot of fun, thanks, and a great feeling of worth after it was all said and done!
She also extended appreciation to other Rotarians who aided the cause: Cesare and his staff; Nelson Mayer for printing the letters; Gene James for designing the presentation plaques, Michelle Bononi for composing the letters to the parents. She believes we should continue this project in future years!
