THE ROTARY MINUTE GREENSBURG ROTARY SCHOLARSHIPS One of the tenets of Rotary has been to support our youth, our future!! Our speaker today was Craig Davis of the Pittsburgh Convention Bureau. Craig spoke about the new David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh. New York architect Rafael Vinoly's design was inspired by the "heavenward slant of steel cables" when he first saw the bridges straddling the Allegheny River. The Convention Center is "striking" for its suspended, sail-like roof, beauty and high functionality. Directly on the riverfront, the Center has 330,000 square feet of exhibit space. There is 250,000 square feet of column free exhibit space. There is a 34,000 square foot ballroom, 12,000 sq. ft main kitchen, 37 loading docks, 53 meeting rooms, two 175-seat lecture halls, state-of-the-art teleconference and telecommunications capabilities. Another highlight is the walkway to the river and the riverfront trail. The David L. Lawrence Convention Center is the first "green" or environmentally smart convention center in the US. Smart use of light, air and water create beauty and efficiency. Craig said that the complex can handle a very small meeting by using only a board room, or even several large separate conventions at the same time. The issues of parking and hotel room space are still problems, however, the Gateway Clipper Fleet and the use of surrounding hotels was mentioned. The cost of the building is $331 million. Our speaker today was Bonnie Harr, Co-chair for the PA Breast Cancer Coalition's first" Westmoreland Walks: Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer". Breast cancer has been with us for many years and the issue has gotten global attention. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women 25 – 54 years old. The leading overall cause of women's death is still heart disease. Pennsylvania is the fourth highest ranked state with the number of breast cancer cases. Each year 330 women in Westmoreland County are diagnosed with breast cancer. Even men are at risk…9 to 11 percent per one hundred thousand men are diagnosed. The theories of the causes are many, but Bonnie feels that information and education is critical to help these individuals. She stated that "more people today are living with cancer rather than dying with cancer". There will be a county wide walkathon (Westmoreland Walks) to aid in breast cancer awareness. It will be held on October 5, 2002. Registration will occur at the Aestique Medical Center in Greensburg, where participants will then be shuttled to Twin Lakes Park. They will walk around the park's 9/10 mile walk path and continue back to the finish line at Aestique. Donations for Small Business and Group Sponsorships start at $200.00 and go up to $750.00 for Corporate Sponsorship. The benefits of the walkathon will be funds for mammogram that will be directed to women in underserved areas or to indigent women. Clinical and lay people will be able to come together to discuss cancer issues. There will be a photo exhibit of "67 Women in 67 Counties" telling there stories of living with breast cancer. (Magee Women's Hospital is hosting this exhibition this week). Other helpful programs for women with breast cancer include "Friends Like Me" and "Woman to Woman". Bonnie says "We want to find a cure now so that our daughters won't have to". Bonnie is employed by Dr. Theodore Lazzaro who deals with many women who need reconstructive surgery after they have battled the disease. Information can be obtained from Bonnie at (724) 832-7555. At age 11 or 12, she was approached by a record company. The family decision was to "pass" on the idea because it would involve a long term deal with the record promoter. She later traveled with her family to Detroit to meet with a newly formed record company. Again they decided not to sign. The little record company went on to become Motown. Chris worked a day job at the Monsour Medical Center. She married and had 3 children. She was in Saudi Arabia for several years. She came back to the Allegheny General Hospital and worked in the dental unit. Chris then attended Carnegie Mellon. She is now with Stage Right! in Greensburg. Joe Cameron was born in Lock 4 (North Charleroi). He attended Belle Vernon High School. His family then moved to Wilkinsburg. Joe went to work for General Electric in New York. He has lived in Melrose, Mass. He has been in the Greensburg area since 1945. He worked for 40 years with the Elliott Company. Joe tried consulting work after his retirement, but said "it was not my style". He is a member of several professional organizations. He said that he always desired to become a Rotarian. Dick McNeel started his autobiography in the year 2002. What a year so far! He has seen his oldest daughter marry about 10 days ago. His next older daughter will be graduating from college in June. His youngest daughter has just started college. He moved his business to a new location in 2000. He started in dentistry in 1972. He met his wife Janet while he was attending dental school. Dick attended Allegheny College and the University of Pittsburgh. (You may wish to read this paragraph backwards to get the information in the correct chronological order). THURSDAY FRIDAY
