WISE AND OTHERWISE
"A clear conscience, like a soft pillow, helps you sleep well."

"For some people, laziness is nothing more than the habit of resting before you get tired."

Today's invocation was given by Bobbi Watt-Geer: "God, slow us down. Create in us a desire to pause, to become more aware of beauty and truth. Teach us how to enjoy being. Encourage us to be present to the gifts that are ours. May we be more fully aware of what we see, taste, touch, hear and smell.
Grant us the courage to be our true selves. Help us to let go of being overly concerned about what others think of us and of how successful we are. May our delight in life be activated. Life is meant to be celebrated and embraced in all its mystery. Draw us to your playground of creation, God of life, so that we will live more fully. Amen."

"Whatever you are, be a good one." (Lincoln)

Today's invocation was given by Ed Meadows: "Thank you, Lord" " For these perfect eyes, when so many walk in darkness! For this voice raised in song, when so many have fallen silent. For these hands able to work, when so many can only beg! To have a safe place to live, when so many are homeless and alone. To be able to laugh and love and dream, when so many know only grief and hatred, whose sleep is invaded by nightmares, who die before even having the chance to live. THE ROTARY MINUTE
(presented by Ann Peagler)

GREENSBURG ROTARY SCHOLARSHIPS

One of the tenets of Rotary has been to support our youth, our future!!
The Rotary Club of Greensburg has been supporting the education of our
youth since 1916. In fact, during the Great Depression, our Secretary, Dr.
Rutter was able to borrow $150, interest free from the Club for his
educational needs. Our Scholarship Program as we know it today, started in
1956. By today’s standard our first scholarships were minimal and
restrictive, two $500 scholarships annually for Greensburg High School
Seniors. In 1962, Hempfield Area Senior High was included with a single
$500 scholarship. Between 1956 and 1971, scholarships increased from
$500 each to $1,150 each. Today, a committee accepts applications from
seniors from Greensburg Salem Sr. High School; Hempfield Area Senior
High School and Greensburg Central Catholic High School and awards
academic scholarships in the amount of $9,500. The committee makes
recommendations on the amount of each scholarship, which usually ranges
from $1,000 to $2,000 each. In addition to our academic scholarships, we
offer vocational scholarships and they will be addressed next week in our
“Rotary Minute”.

LOCATION COMMITTEE – A committee has been formed, by action of the Board, to consider options regarding the meeting location of our Club. Members are: Cesare Muccari, Ed Nemanic, Bob Bloom, Dick McNeel, Pete Cecconi, Jeff Malloy and Chris Rizk. Any opinions that you wish to express can be directed to these members.

OUR WEEKLY MEETING

Our speaker today was Craig Davis of the Pittsburgh Convention Bureau. Craig spoke about the new David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh. New York architect Rafael Vinoly's design was inspired by the "heavenward slant of steel cables" when he first saw the bridges straddling the Allegheny River. The Convention Center is "striking" for its suspended, sail-like roof, beauty and high functionality. Directly on the riverfront, the Center has 330,000 square feet of exhibit space. There is 250,000 square feet of column free exhibit space. There is a 34,000 square foot ballroom, 12,000 sq. ft main kitchen, 37 loading docks, 53 meeting rooms, two 175-seat lecture halls, state-of-the-art teleconference and telecommunications capabilities. Another highlight is the walkway to the river and the riverfront trail. The David L. Lawrence Convention Center is the first "green" or environmentally smart convention center in the US. Smart use of light, air and water create beauty and efficiency. Craig said that the complex can handle a very small meeting by using only a board room, or even several large separate conventions at the same time. The issues of parking and hotel room space are still problems, however, the Gateway Clipper Fleet and the use of surrounding hotels was mentioned. The cost of the building is $331 million.
You can learn more about the property and take a virtual tour by visiting www.planpittsburgh.com

THE ROTARY MINUTE
(presented by Mark Barnhart)

THE NUMBERS TELL THE TALE
For the last 14 years we have partnered with Westmoreland Regional Hospital for the Multiphasic Blood Testing Program. Rather than work on a per capita agreement, the Westmoreland Regional Hospital has "guaranteed" us $6,000.00 for our work. Since 1976 a total of 55,281 individuals have taken advantage of the Spring Blood Testing Program. In addition to the two Saturdays of testing in the Spring, we have added a Saturday of testing in the Fall which is at the HealthPlace at Westmoreland Mall. For the Fall testing, our Club receives an additional $1,000.00. This is a total of $7,000.00 annually which is generated from the Multiphasic Blood Testing Programs and these funds have traditionally been used for our Academic and Vocational Scholarships. These scholarships will be an upcoming topic for our "Rotary Minute".

OUR NEWEST MEMBERS
Linda Thomas and Michael Brewer became the newest members of our Club today. Linda is with Citizens Bank and Michael is with the Seton Hill College. We look forward to your joining in service with us for our community, nation and world. Welcome.

MEMBERSHIPO PROPOSAL – The Classification and Membership Committees, as well as the Board of Directors have approved the following membership proposal for publication. Unless there is written objection submitted to the Secretary within 7 days, the following proposed new member will be admitted as a member of the Club. Helene Conway-Long, Diocese of Greensburg, Director of Marketing and Development. Helene resides at 720 Weldon Street in Latrobe. Her employment address is 723 East Pittsburgh Street in Greensburg. She has been proposed by Judy Ross.

Our speaker today was Bonnie Harr, Co-chair for the PA Breast Cancer Coalition's first" Westmoreland Walks: Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer". Breast cancer has been with us for many years and the issue has gotten global attention. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women 25 – 54 years old. The leading overall cause of women's death is still heart disease. Pennsylvania is the fourth highest ranked state with the number of breast cancer cases. Each year 330 women in Westmoreland County are diagnosed with breast cancer. Even men are at risk…9 to 11 percent per one hundred thousand men are diagnosed. The theories of the causes are many, but Bonnie feels that information and education is critical to help these individuals. She stated that "more people today are living with cancer rather than dying with cancer". There will be a county wide walkathon (Westmoreland Walks) to aid in breast cancer awareness. It will be held on October 5, 2002. Registration will occur at the Aestique Medical Center in Greensburg, where participants will then be shuttled to Twin Lakes Park. They will walk around the park's 9/10 mile walk path and continue back to the finish line at Aestique. Donations for Small Business and Group Sponsorships start at $200.00 and go up to $750.00 for Corporate Sponsorship. The benefits of the walkathon will be funds for mammogram that will be directed to women in underserved areas or to indigent women. Clinical and lay people will be able to come together to discuss cancer issues. There will be a photo exhibit of "67 Women in 67 Counties" telling there stories of living with breast cancer. (Magee Women's Hospital is hosting this exhibition this week). Other helpful programs for women with breast cancer include "Friends Like Me" and "Woman to Woman". Bonnie says "We want to find a cure now so that our daughters won't have to". Bonnie is employed by Dr. Theodore Lazzaro who deals with many women who need reconstructive surgery after they have battled the disease. Information can be obtained from Bonnie at (724) 832-7555.

WISE AND OTHERWISE
"Go often to the houses of your friends, for weeds soon choke up the unused path ."(Scandinavian Proverb)

"It is far more impressive when others discover your good qualities without your help."

Today's invocation: "Our Father God, although we may forget to let you know, we are grateful for the abundance that You have provided. We ask for Your comforting touch and healing hand for those with special needs. Please help us to remember that our success will always be measured by the quality and quantity of service that we render, here in our own community, as well as all of Your world. Amen."

Sergeant At Arms Report (John Hanna)- We had one visiting Rotarian: Dana Gould (Blairsville). We had three guests of members: Linda Thomas (Frank Cassell), Karen Hochendoner (Paul Hochendoner), Ali Abdullah (Frank VanHorn). Our student guests were: Matt Evans and Patrick Andre from the Hempfield Area Sr. High School, Alicia Painter from Greensburg Salem and Emily Beaver from Greensburg Central Catholic. Thanks to the drivers: Joe Biss, Jim Harrold and Ed Meadows.

The Club has received an amount of $6,000.00 from the Westmoreland Regional Hospital for our services. This was a tremendous job by our members. The money will provide scholarships to local high school seniors as they enter college.

HIGHWAY CLEANUP PROJECT - Bill Taylor will lead the first Highway Cleanup of the year on Saturday, June 1st.

DISTRICT CONFERENCE IS MAY 10 – 12 AT SEVEN SPRINGS. PLEASE CONSIDER ATTENDING A SESSION OR TWO. It was mentioned that there will be a Paul Harris Fellow breakfast on Saturday. This would be a great opportunity to show support by having a large group from our Club to attend.

NEXT WEEK'S MEETING: Bonnie Harr – "Walk for Breast Cancer".

THE ROTARY MINUTE
(presented by Joe Biss on 04-23-02)

THE START OF OUR BLOOD TESTING PROGRAM

In 1975, shortly after taking office, Win Beidler, President of our Rotary
Club approached the Board of Directors about a possible Community Fund-
Raising Project that he had heard about, Multiphasic Blood Testing. After
receiving the “blessing” of the Board, on a cold winter Saturday morning,
Win and fellow member Cy Wolverton traveled to Indiana, Pa. to witness
first-hand the operation of the Blood Multiphasic Blood Testing Program.
At a subsequent meeting of the Board of Directors, the Board
was told how the program works and that it “runs itself”. The Board
approved of the project and in March and April of 1976, the Rotary Club of
Greensburg held its first Multiphasic Blood Testing Program on three
Saturdays in March and on one Saturday in April in the cafeteria of the
Greensburg Salem Senior High School, the cost was $10 per person for 14
tests. Yes, we started out with 4 weeks of testing.

MANY CLUBS ADOPT THE BLOOD TESTING PROGRAM
(presented by Pete Dochinez)

Our Club was not the first Club in District 7330 to hold a Blood Testing
Program, we were second to Indiana; but ahead of Connellsville and
Washington who also adopted the program as a Community Service/Fund
Raiser. Since the “early days” tests have been hosted by the Mountain
View and Latrobe Clubs and also by West Penn Power. While the initial
testing was done through Biozyme Laboratories of Olean, New York; we
have since partnered with Westmoreland Regional Hospital. Our original
testing was done at Greensburg Salem Senior High School, we have also
held the testing at Aquinas Academy in Greensburg and the Nicely
Elementary School in Greensburg. How many of you can remember the year
that Jim Harrold held a Pancake Breakfast at the First United Methodist Church
in Greensburg for the Club in connection with the Blood Testing Program?

THE BIRTHDAY TABLE
(presented by Guy Davis)
Our Club only has 5 Rotarians with birthdays in April….but what a group! There are 93 total years of Rotary service between them. All have served as a member of the Board of Directors. Three have been President of the Club. One has been named the Rotarian of the Year. All 5 are Paul Harris Fellow Recipients. Happy Birthday to Joe Burkley, Guy Davis, Tom Dowling, Dave Delisi and Bobbi Stemmler-Guest.

OUR WEEKLY MEETING

Mini-Autobiographies

Christine (Chris) Rizk was born in East Pittsburgh, moved to Irwin and told us that she sang during her early years. At age 11 or 12, she was approached by a record company. The family decision was to "pass" on the idea because it would involve a long term deal with the record promoter. She later traveled with her family to Detroit to meet with a newly formed record company. Again they decided not to sign. The little record company went on to become Motown. Chris worked a day job at the Monsour Medical Center. She married and had 3 children. She was in Saudi Arabia for several years. She came back to the Allegheny General Hospital and worked in the dental unit. Chris then attended Carnegie Mellon. She is now with Stage Right! in Greensburg.

Joe Cameron was born in Lock 4 (North Charleroi). He attended Belle Vernon High School. His family then moved to Wilkinsburg. Joe went to work for General Electric in New York. He has lived in Melrose, Mass. He has been in the Greensburg area since 1945. He worked for 40 years with the Elliott Company. Joe tried consulting work after his retirement, but said "it was not my style". He is a member of several professional organizations. He said that he always desired to become a Rotarian.

Dick McNeel started his autobiography in the year 2002. What a year so far! He has seen his oldest daughter marry about 10 days ago. His next older daughter will be graduating from college in June. His youngest daughter has just started college. He moved his business to a new location in 2000. He started in dentistry in 1972. He met his wife Janet while he was attending dental school. Dick attended Allegheny College and the University of Pittsburgh. (You may wish to read this paragraph backwards to get the information in the correct chronological order).
