UPCOMING PROGRAMS Our Birthday Table was hosted today by Bobbi Watt-Geer. Bobbi wondered what Community Funds that members would establish if they hit the lottery. Each was very interesting and gave good insight into each of the B-Day people. She even tried to make it all happen by handing out a ticket to each of the members with birthdays in March. (Nice job Bobbi). Some had cake, some had pie, and we all sang. HAPPY BIRTHDAY. We will need time at other meetings to complete the agenda that was scheduled for today.

This will allow her some spending money – she will use $200.00 for meals that aren't covered and some souvenirs. The remaining $550.00 will be held and used for additional unforeseen expenses for this and future exchange students. We will present this to Ivana at next week's meeting. I must commend and thank each and every one of you for this outpouring of affection for Ivana. I know that she will be very moved by this unselfish act. This is truly the spirit of Rotary at work, and I'm so proud to be associated with this Club. UPCOMING PROGRMAS Our program today was presented by LTC Marcel Denard, a dentist and reservist, who spoke about his experiences in Afghanistan last year. He was called up in April and reported to Ford Dix, NJ. After soldier training, it was time to practice to build a hospital that they would have to then disassemble and then transport it to Afghanistan. Before doing this, they went through 72 hour "no sleep exercises", to prepare them for what awaited them overseas. They broke down the hospital, packed it up, placed it and the fellow members of the mission on five C5 planes and took off for Germany. They then unloaded and reloaded onto fifteen C17 aircraft for their destination of Afghanistan. They arrived in Bagram on 24 June, 2002. LTC Denard described it as an intensely hot location during the day, ranging from 85 to 110 degrees. Sand storms were menacing. There were mine fields everywhere. Everyone was required to set up tents and construct the hospital which was made up of 20 foot long containers that were joined together. After the hospital construction was completed, supplies were inventoried. The first patients to arrive were young children who were injured in a bombing. Others to be treated, in addition to our own troops, included the Russians, Estonians, French and other allies. Due to the Geneva Convention, Taliban patients were also treated. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all these brave and dedicated men and women in the military as they serve our Country. MARCH'S BIRTHDAYS WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY

UPCOMING PROGRMAS April 1- Cheryl Kemerer, Westmoreland Drug and Alcohol Commission, Tobacco Prevention Sales to Teens Program. Our program today was presented by Ivana Guimaraes Pedreira, our Exchange Student from Brazil. Ivana is 18 years old and was born in Brasilia, the capital of her country. She represents the Rotary Club of Brasilia Sudeste. Her father is in public relations for the bank "Banco do Brasil". Her mother works in the State government. She has an older brother Igor and a younger sister Bruna. She enjoys her pets, a dog and a cat, however, when she goes to her grandfather's farm, she loves to horseback ride. She enjoys shopping at the mall and hanging out with friends. She graduated from high school in Brazil and attended one semester of college for communications and public relations. She is studying hard to pass the TOEFL (English Exam) to qualify to come back to the USA in January to possibly attend the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg. Ivana told us about her country with the help of a slide show presentation. The population of Brazil is approximately 170 million. It is the largest country, in area, in South America. Portuguese is the official language, although it is very different from what is spoken in Portugal. The capital, Brasilia, was a planned project. It was planned for only 500,000 inhabitants. It is now populated by 2.1 million. The country is very beautiful, from the beaches of Rio de Janeiro, the city of Sao Paulo to the Amazon. Ivana said that the Brazilian young people are good hosts who love to welcome tourists with open arms and radiant smiles. She invited us all to come to Brazil some day so that she could repay us all for the hospitality that she has had from the Club. She said that she was very fortunate to have had this exchange experience and that she has enjoyed it very much. She gave much thanks to her host mother and father, Kati and Glen Doran. (Ivana is another wonderful example of the benefits of our Club's continued interest and support of the Student Exchange Program. Why not become more involved with this program?) This young man attended the 2002 World Jamboree in Thailand. Ken said that he left for the Jamboree on Christmas Day. His first flight on an airplane took some time to get used to…but he had a lot of time due to the length of the flight. He and other scouts stayed along the ocean about three hours from Bangkok. The scouts were placed in one of four villages that were named for an ocean. The villages were then divided into sub camps. There were 106 countries represented. Ken said, "that the main goal was to meet other people". He and the others worked on service projects surrounding the camp. He helped put in a garden while others constructed a garden walkway. He found the Thai people to be very friendly. He was struck, however, by the sharp contrast of large commercial factories surrounded by slums. He was able to take a tour in a jungle…a real jungle as he described it. He and other members of the "Keystone Patrol from Pennsylvania" had great fun learning about other cultures from their fellow scouts. There were information booths for each country represented, a Global Development Village, a City of Science and a Prayer Village. Ken reported that a lot of countries could not afford many items that the American scouts had with them. Before they left to return home, Ken and his fellow Americans donated many items, such as sleeping bags and tents, to these less fortunate scouts.
