PRESIDENT’S DAY CELEBRATION FOR CATHY AND MARY
A time of endings and beginnings!
The setting was a gracious dining area at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, the rain had stopped and everything was in good form. As we entered the meeting area, music floated from the keyboard of Chris Pangikas, a friend of Gene James, and it filled the air. Amid the many conversations of those gathered, cheese, fruit, and beverages were served and exclaimed over! (P.S. – the pineapple was absolutely sweet and delicious.) A big screen honored our president Cathy Baumann.

Our President Elect, Mary Clymer rang the bell and in a gracious manner called us to our seats. Some of us were a little hard of hearing, but we were promptly seated. Mary called on Seth Porter, the recipient of the Kenneth P. Rutter Scholarship to give the invocation for us. Dinner was served buffet style and in the usual luscious manner of the catering service at UPG it was outstanding.

Following dinner, Mary noted that we had two unfortunate events occur: first, Chris Rizk was quite ill and in the hospital. Mary sent a card around for us to sign, and we wish Chris our best, and keep her in our prayers. The second was that Tony Martino needed desperately for us to fill empty slots on Sunday July 2, Monday July 3, and Tuesday July 4, for the Arts and Heritage Festival Booth. A Clip board was sent around to the members present to sign up. IF YOU WERE NOT PRESENT, please call Tony or if you were present and didn’t respond, WE NEED YOU. Call him.

PAUL HARRIS AWARDS were introduced by PDG Bill Kern, with a history of the award; and then he called upon Ed Nemanic for the first presentation of the evening to his wife, Camille. Then Ray Charley made the second presentation to his wife, Kay. Unfortunately Kay was not with us because of illness, and we remember her in our thoughts and prayers. Both ladies were praised by their husbands for the impact they have had on their lives and the lives of those in our community. We salute them for their good works. CONGRATULATIONS!

Mary took over the podium once again and read us a letter from an exchange student whom we sponsored, thanking us for making a most memorable year for them in international relationships. This effort does make a difference in lives of our youth!

A skit of the trials and tribulations, joys and accomplishments of the past year under the leadership of Cathy Baumann was presented by Mary Clymer, Dennis Cremonese, Carl Rossman and Gene James. Using audiovisual images, and a right interesting dialogue, they caught our year in a NUT shell. Sometimes the nut was cracked! But it was all there. Good job!
Cathy got a standing ovation! Following this presentation, Cathy thanked the club for the efforts of the year, and called her board to present them with a token of her appreciation for all they had done.

Mary popped up again with the microphone and announced that there would be a board meeting on July 13 at UPG, and that THERE WOULD NOT BE A REGULAR MEETING ON JULY 4 AT THE SHERATON – BUT WE ARE ALL URGED TO BE AT THE FESTIVAL BOOTH THAT DAY!
She then asked Cathy to come forward again, and presented her with the Past President’s Pin from our club in appreciation for her leadership. Following this, Ed Nemanic awarded the Kenneth P. Rutter Scholarship for the first time to Seth Porter who will be attending Ohio Christian University in Ohio. Seth shared with us that his goal is to serve in a mission field in Bolivia. His schooling will begin on Sept. 1. The funds for the scholarship of $4000. were taken from the $35,000. raised by the club and community this past May for Dr. Rutter’s scholarship. (A reminder that we can contribute to this fund in memory of a loved one, or to honor a personal friend. We hope to increase the principal amount so that we can continue to offer a significant scholarship to the selected recipient.)

Cathy Baumann led the club in the four way test and rang the club bell for the last time of her presidency. Well done, Cathy!
Welcome, Mary Clymer – it’s just begun, and you will have our love and support!

DOCTOR HOWER can use some more help for the FISHING OUTING FOR ARC. 4:30 on Thursday, June 29 at his home. It’s a fun day – so if at all possible, pitch in! It is for a good cause.

PROGRAM FOR THE DAY Auto biography by our own ED NEMANIC. We learned some interesting facts about one who has worked so hard for our Rotary Club. Ed was born in Carrick, 1 of 5 children, and had 3 older sisters who wouldn’t let him get away with much. (Or so he tells us.) 1965 his family moved to East High Acres and he went to school in Latrobe until his family decided to send him to Greensburg Central Catholic, where he graduated in 1980. From there he attended Duquesne University, graduating in 1984 and going to work for Merrill Lynch in Washington D.C. While in college, he met Camille and was later married. He and Camille with a new daughter subsequently moved to Philadelphia, Camille’s hometown, and he found employment at PNC. In 1994 his job with PNC brought him to Greensburg. In 2001 he accepted an offer from Commercial Bank and is currently employed there. Ed likes to golf, cook, garden, play guitar (likes to jam with other Rotarians). HE was president of our club in 2002-2003. He, Camille and their 3 children will celebrate their 20th Wedding Anniversary on July 5. We are proud to have him in our friendship and our club. Thanks, Ed!

MEMBERSHIP PROPOSAL
The Board of Directors has approved the following for publication:
Daniel Carr, Owner of Ethix Systems (computer consulting, office networking, software engineering), residing and conducting business in Greensburg, has been proposed for membership by Bob Bloom. Dan has attended at least two meetings as a guest. Any objection to him becoming a member must be received in writing by the Secretary within the required seven days…June 20th. Without objection, Dan will be inducted into the Club.

PROGRAM FOR THE DAY was ADIB BARSOUM who gave us an update on his second trip to Kenya and the Children’s Hospital at Kijabe. He and his wife volunteered and worked there from mid January to March of this year.
It is an Africa Inland Church Mission. Most of the physicians are from America and the United Kingdom who volunteer from 6 months to a year. There are only 2 permanent physicians at the Children’s part of the hospital . The volunteers complete about 250 to 300 procedures on the children per month. The presentation made us all realize how privileged we are to live in such a world where people are touched to share of their talent and skills to change lives for the better.
Adib also took us on a bit of a safari with him and Joy. We got to see some of the fabulous animals roaming around the lands there. We’re glad they did not get too close. What a beautiful country we saw! Thanks, Adib!
