UPCOMING PROGRAMS
June 29 – President’s Day Dinner at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg (No noon meeting that day).
OUR WEEKLY MEETING’S PROGRAM
The program today was presented by Joe Mellott, a Foreign Service Officer, who just completed a two-year tour at the US Embassy in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He has also served at the US embassy in Albania. Joe hails from Greensburg and is on his way to his next assignment as a staff aide to the US Ambassador to NATO in Brussels, Belgium.
Joe spoke of the program, Hometown Diplomats, which was conceived by Collin Powell. The idea is to provide information to people about the workings of the embassies around the world. The structures of the embassies are the same in each country. He spoke to us about his experiences in Bangladesh.
In Dhaka, he dealt with the local public and with the American citizens in that country. He spoke of his attempts to inform students that wish to come to America to study that the United States has not closed it doors to the students. In the Economic Section, he and others have worked with the Bangladeshis to bring businesses to the country by attempting to level the playing field for all that wish to deal in that country. Also insisting on better working conditions for the people of that country, whose major exports are garments and telecommunications. The Political Section of the embassy deals with government-to-government relations. The Internal Management section deals with areas such as transportation, schools for children of embassy workers, housing and healthcare.
The new program that they are using is to “take the embassy on the road” to point out the public relations message “that the United States is not just a military might”. We use are greatest asset, which is, leading by example.

June 22 – Mini-autobiography and the Birthday Table
June 29 – President’s Day Dinner at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg (No noon meeting that day).
OUR WEEKLY MEETING’S PROGRAM
The program today was presented by WTAE’s Jerry Martz. He told of his early awaking at 3:00 AM to be on the air at 5:00 AM. He and other meteorologists consult with Air Science Consultants to prepare the forecast for the day. He mentioned that the number one killer related to thunderstorms is flash flooding. Lightning accounts for one to two deaths on average in the Western PA area each year. While tornados occur each year in the area, downburst or microbursts occur twice as many times as tornados. Jerry fielded some questions from the group. In regard to Global Warming, he said that he simply doesn’t know if it is occurring or if the temperature variance is due to cycles. He mentioned that while there has been changes in the atmosphere due to gases from mining and factories and ozone depletion from aerosols, the number of years that studies have been conducted verses the time of earth’s existence, more time and study would be needed. He assured Mary that she will probably not have beach front property in Greensburg, due to a fault line and the rumors that have been out there, anytime soon. The “brother-in-law weather predictor” (calling him in Chicago and seeing what weather will be coming to Western PA) cannot always be 100 percent accurate. The lake effects and mountains have been know to throw some very unpredictable conditions around here. Jerry said that there is never a dull moment with the weather in the Pittsburgh area. He thoroughly enjoys his hometown area and says that he has a perfect job in just the area he wishes to be.
