NEXT WEEK'S PROGRAM - Pete Cecconi, Program Chairman for June, will present fellow member Kati Doran, who will introduce our speaker, Gail Hepler, our Club's Outbound Exchange Student who will be living in Belguim. OUR WEEKLY MEETING Our speaker, Jo Lane Cecconi, gave a presentation on Mom's House. Mom's House was founded in 1983 to help young single women who were faced with a problem pregnancy. Often there are only two choices: to have an abortion or join the welfare cycle. There are 13 facilities in 4 states in the Northeastern U.S. It was noted that there are 1 million babies born to single parents each year. The Greensburg Mom's House in Carbon opened in 1992. They are able to serve some 20 single parents and children. Day care is provided to infants and pre-school children. Education is provided to help parents to be able to support their children. It was noted that 60 single parent graduates are now employed. The first mother to have a child cared for at the Greensburg Mom's House has now become a doctor. Upon entry into the program, single parents are required to sign a contract that stipulates that they must stay in school or job training, get good grades, attend parenting classes and volunteer to help at the House. We were shown a videotape showing how one mother and one child are helped, one at a time. Teens that have no hope and are in despair are educated as to how they can succeed and be able to support themselves and their child. Many parents go on to graduate from high school and college. Tutoring, direction where to find legal assistance and answers on nutritional education are available. Breakfast, lunch and dinner can be provided for the children. By breaking the welfare cycle, many dollars are saved each year. More importantly, the single parent and child are able to find stability. Mom's House is totally privately funded. It is a United Way member agency. THIS MONTH’S BIRTHDAYS: MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY

NEXT WEEK'S PROGRAM - Pete Cecconi, Program Chairman for June, will present fellow member Judith O'Toole, Director of the Westmoreland Museum of American Art. OUR WEEKLY MEETING We were joined today by Rob Unkovic from Berkowitz Pierchalski, Inc. His presentation was on "Money, the Market and the Fed". Rob started by stating that the economy had grown for a complete decade and it is still growing. It has slowed more rapidly in any time since World War II. He talked about the implications of a slowdown: global effects, deficits, corporate profits, layoffs, etc. He said that 71% of consumers studied said that they think there will be a recession coming. Household debt is currently 105% of disposal income. More that 5 trillion dollars has "been blown away" in this bear market. While the economy may be contracting, he said that another interest rate reduction by the Fed might stop the slow down. Lower interest rates coupled with a tax cut will allow people to spend more again. His opinion was that there would probably be less than a 2% growth by year-end. Maybe a little better next year….but not like the last years. He believes that people are going to tiptoe back into the market rather than stampede. His forecast for the next decade is that stock prices will surprise investors, not by the price increase, but rather by the lack thereof. He stated that the media was a player in the promoting of the new economy and dot.coms. The speculative components will not be as they were in the past. He thinks that bonds may outpace stocks for the next decade. THIS MONTH’S BIRTHDAYS: MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY

NEXT WEEK'S PROGRAM - Pete Cecconi, Program Chairman for June, will present Rob Unkovic, Vice President, Berkowitz Pierchalski, Inc. brokerage firm. OUR WEEKLY MEETING We were joined today by Mother Mary Anne Noel, OSB, prioress of St. Emma's Monastery. She started by explaining to us that OSB stands for Order of St. Benedict. She said that in 480 AD, Benedict, studied in Rome. He became unsatisfied with the conditions in Rome and dropped out. He sought God, seeing the need for a conversion of life and obedience. It was noted that he lived in a cave during this time in his life. In 1035 a monastery was founded in Germany. In 1852 Boniface Wimmer came from Germany to St. Vincent. Some of the sisters that accompanied him relocated in several states. In 1939 there were 40 sisters at St. Vincent, which was a self-contained monastery. In 1962 Mother Mary Anne entered St. Emma's. She advised that in 1943 a house and 10 acres was obtained from the Robertshaw family. The next year an adjoining 100 acre farm was purchased. The 1950's saw the building of a chapel and retreat house. She described the construction of other buildings and improvements to the property over the years. There is another ground breaking for a new monastic chapel that is occurring on June 10th at 2:30 P.M.. It was mentioned that the sisters welcome over 100 groups and about 3,500 persons per year. The retreat and monastery is a place where people have the opportunity to come aside to a God-centered place to "recharge their batteries". In the last 7 years, 6 women have entered the monastery. It takes about 6 years after entering to be able to take vows for life. Three women entered last year and they had 55 inquires.
