WISE AND OTHERWISE
"Wisdom is knowing what to do next; virtue is doing it."

"Money is the opposite of the weather. Nobody talks about it, but everybody does something about it.."

TODAY’S INVOCATION was given by Bill Rudolph. "Almighty and Eternal God, we ask that You bless all here present, and that You bless the work of Rotary International. We live in dangerous times, where wars and strife abound. Help us as Rotarians to serve those less fortunate, so that we may become peacemakers and healers. All this we ask in Your precious name. Amen".

OUR WEEKLY MEETING

Our speaker today was Dorothy Andreas, Sewickley Spa CEO. There are currently three spa locations, Ligonier, Sewickley and Deep Creek, MD. Dorothy told us that she is a native of PA who left college at age 19 to start her own hair salon. By 1986, she had opened her second salon. She later began to travel internationally and become aware of day spas. She stayed in Europe for a year and researched the possibility of opening a spa in PA. She was advised by her friends that it would be "against the odds" to make a day spa work successfully in this region. She needed a market. She bought an old Victorian home in Sewickley, renovated it, and in 1997, she opened her business. She later opened the spa in Ligonier and has just opened another in Maryland. She tells of how her business gives great stress relief through massages, facials, skin care and mud wraps. She has experienced a huge increase in business since the tragedy of September 11th. She said that more entertainment dollars are now being spent for the spas' services. Corporate sales are steadily increasing…rather that treating clients to golf outings or dinners, companies are now offering a trip to the spa! Dorothy has recently developed a line of products and hopes to be able to market them through QVC.
Dorothy enjoys education through seminars. She has also been active in the raising of funds for homeless children by helping to organize 28 cities for donations totaling over $100,000 to this cause.

OUR WEEKLY MEETING

Our Club's Secretary, Ken Rutter, was asked to fill in as our program speaker today after the scheduled speaker could not attend. Talk about "turning lemons into lemonade".

Ken said that being a secretary is being the recorder of history. He has seen much good and has met wonderful people through his Rotary years. Ken and other "go-getters" organized the Rotary Club of California, PA in 1945, which started with 25 members. He tells us that he is the "last leaf on the tree". The original group wanted to do something constructive for the community and have a family feeling atmosphere. Ken said, " our lives are not our own, they are to be shared with others". He and the others realized that "Service Above Self" is doing the little things that count. His experience with the California Club was very meaningful. Then, in 1952, he went to Johnstown. That club had 145 members, quite a change from the smaller club! Ken became President of the Club and "fostered acquaintances" and made many dear friends. Ken told the story about his trip to the Congo with a friend from Rotary. The friend said that he had seen a program about a "jungle surgeon" that needed medication for the patients that he saw. (The surgeon used a bicycle to get back and forth through the area he served). The two friends, on their way to the Congo, traveled to Belgium where Ken met a man at a Rotary meeting. Ken told the man that they were headed to the Congo, however, they unfortunately were not able to locate the medication that the surgeon requested. The Rotarian introduced himself as a pharmacist, left the meeting and returned with the medicine that was needed. Ken and his friend continued on to the Congo, located Dr. Ross, and delivered the drugs. Because of Rotary…..lives were saved.
In 1958, Ken came back to the city where he was born. He married, raised his children, conducted his ministry, served his community and the organization of Rotary. He told of a Rotary trip to England, persons met and friendships that have lasted a lifetime…this all because of Rotary.
Mentioning his early years, Ken told of how he was potentially unable to attend college, even though he was the valedictorian of his class, due to lack of funds and the death of his father when he was an infant. He met a Rotarian and was able to "borrow" money from the Rotary Club of Greensburg to attend college. Because of Rotary……Ken's credentials are numerous. He cannot imagine where he would be if not for this chance.
Ken wants us to remember that Rotary is worldwide.
Because of Rotary….miraculous things are possible.

Thanks Ken.
Because of Rotary…..how very fortunate we all are to know you!

WISE AND OTHERWISE
"The time to pray is not only when you are in a tight spot, but just as soon as you get out of it too."

A REPORT ON OUR PRESIENT'S DAY (EVENING MEETING) OF JUNE 24TH.
What a wonderful evening for Presidents Day! We joined in great fellowship, at a beautiful setting with great food and wonderful music performed by James Boggs, to thank Ed for his tremendous leadership of our Club for the past year. Much was accomplished under his reign, from community projects to world programs. Our Club and our leader was duly recognized over the last year by the attainment of numerous awards and other recognitions. From all of us, thanks Ed. Thanks also to Camille and Ed's children for their understanding of the time requirements involved with being President. We are all better due to Ed's commitment to serve the club at the level he did.

PAUL HARRIS FELLOW RECOGNITIONS
Bill Barger was presented his PHF by President Ed. Bill was described as a wonderful father and husband who adores his family. Bill has served our Country in the Air Force, teaches Sunday School, enjoys the outdoors and has even been known to write some poetry. Bill has organized our Club's participation in the World Affairs lecture series in Pittsburgh and has given of his time to many of our Club's projects.

Barbara Jones was presented a PHF by the Club. Helping to present it was Judith O'Toole. Barbara, a non-Rotarian, demonstrated courage, selflessness, compassion and love when she donated a kidney to her fellow worker and friend Judith O'Toole. The Club was very happy to recognize a person who cares for others and is willing to step forward and help out those who need. Congratulations to both of you.

On a much lighter note, we had a special appearance from Carnack the Magnificent, aka Jeff Malloy and his sidekick (Ed "Mary Clymer" McMahon. It was time to rib and roast President Ed…..and they did a good job of it.

OUR WEEKLY MEETING

Jerry Salandro from IRIS Technologies, Inc spoke about his company that was founded in 1987 and holds over 35 patent claims for software concepts. We viewed a video that highlighted the Landro which is the world's first play analyzer. This provides tape-less access to 20,000 plays instantly. Football teams and their coaches are now able to have instant access to plays so that coaching is now taken to a new level. He explained and showed how a taping of a game could be broken down into categorized and filed sections, available for immediate playback. No longer do coaches have to spend hours or days to review game tapes. Nor due players have to put up with the long delays during coaching sessions, having to change tapes, rewind or fast forward the video. He stated that it no longer takes six hours to breakdown game videos…it can now be done in thirty minutes.
Jerry has also used this type of system with the Pentagon to do news analysis. He stated that news reports from the media, during operations in Iraq, were viewed and then compiled so that information could be obtained.
Being an educator, his company has developed programs that are used at Indiana University. One helps psychologists study children while another helps with speech therapy.
Throughout his talk, Jerry spoke about the need for good relationships with fellow workers and employees and the importance of ethics.
