OUR WEEKLY MEETING.
Our speaker today was fellow member John Harman. John is the Director of the Lincoln Highway Association for the State of Pennsylvania. The mission statement of the LHA is to identify, preserve, interpret and improve access to the Lincoln Highway and its associated sites. The Lincoln Highway was the first designated and improved trans-continental route across the United States. Carl Fisher the "Indy Man" had a dream of a Coast to Coast Rock Highway. He and other industrial leaders joined to make this dream a reality. The LHA formed in 1913, linking country roads and creating seedling miles between communities. Dwight D. Eisenhower was among the first group that traveled across the country in 1915. A moving picture was recorded showing the journey. Part of the plan of the trip was to see if defense forces could be moved from one part of the country to another. In 1928 directional markers were installed with the help of many Boy Scouts. In 1956, President Eisenhower initiated the Interstate Highway System due to his knowledge of the importance of such a roadway from his trip in earlier years. The Lincoln Highway runs from New York City to Lincoln Park in San Francisco. The length covers 3,389 miles.

"Horse sense is the thing a horse has which keeps it from betting on people."(W. C. Fields)

"Life's Little Instructions"
Treat everyone you meet like you would want to be treated. Watch a sunrise once a year. Strive for excellence, not perfection. Compliment three people everyday. Leave everything a little better than when you found it. Become the most positive and enthusiastic person you know. Say "Thank you" and "Please" a lot. Keep secrets. Be there when other people need you. Don't expect life to be fair. Keep your promises. Count your blessings.

OUR WEEKLY MEETING.
Our speaker today was Steve Peles, an owner of the Jennerstown Speedway. Steve said that he and Robert Brooks bought the speedway after the death of the long time owner and then several years of leasing. He is in the process of revitalizing and rebuilding the speedway. This year there will be 5 races that will be broadcast on national television. One of these races will be run this weekend. The premier race is the late model class, followed by the pro truck class, street stock, charger and legacy classes. There is even an entry level enduro class where new race drivers can "get their feet wet" with the racing bug. Steve said that the average speed for the late model cars is 105 mph. The track is slightly over one half mile long. Local drivers race every week during the season. Race night purses totaling $10,000.00 are up for grabs. Estimates of car costs range from $35,000.00 for the late models, $20,000.00 for the pro truck to $10,000.00 for the street stock, entry level cars. For about $300.00 per person, you can become involved with the Ride and Drive Experience by riding along with Steve at about 105 mph or taking your turn behind the wheel. This year, on September 14th, there will be a 93 lap late model race memorializing Flight 93. The world's largest American flag will be on display. It measures 220 ft by 440 ft. Helicopter rides will be available so that those wishing to, can view the flag from the sky.
