The Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships program is the world's largest privately funded international scholarships program. In 1947, 18 "Rotary Fellows" from 11 countries were selected to serve as ambassadors of goodwill while studying in another country for one academic year. Since that time, approximately $335 million has been expended on some 30,000 scholarships for people from more that 125 countries, studying in 105 countries around the world. The purpose of the scholarships program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries. This award is intended to help cover round-trip transportation, tuition, fees, room and board expenses and some education supplies up to $25,000 or its equivalent. Academic Year Scholarships are the most common type of scholarships offered; nearly 1,200 were awarded for study in 2000-01. If you know of any prospective scholars, you have the ability to have them apply through this Club. STRIKE OUT HUNGER NIGHT AT PNC PARK - What a great time for the members and their families and also the 12 RAP students who attended. There were 47 of us on the bus. Ed Nemanic, who joined the Club in 1995, tells us that he is one of five brothers and sisters. He was born in Carrick and moved to Greensburg with his parents in 1965. He attended Mt. View Elementary school and later attended Greensburg Central Catholic, where he graduated from in 1980. He attended and graduated from Duquesne College in 1984 with an accounting degree. He met Camille in college and they were wed in 1986. Ed worked in Washington, DC for a while. He then got a job in Philadelphia with PNC. He was able to transfer to Greensburg in 1994. He is now with Commercial National Bank in downtown Greensburg where he works in the Trust Department. He and Camille have 3 children. Ed expressed his appreciation for being able to be associated with Rotary and the members of this Club. Tom Jachimowicz stepped to the podium and advised us that he came to Greensburg after retiring as the Superintendent of Schools in Aliquippa. His retirement has been full of volunteer activities with the Red Cross and Cultural Council of Greensburg to name a few. He said that 4 years ago he became involved with the Greensburg Cultural Council. In 1999 he helped with the Greensburg Bi-Centennial. He is involved with the St. Clair Park and amphitheater project. Tom is a Past President of our Club, serving from 1990-1991. Tom is married to Patty. He has four grown children and is a grandfather twice. We found out that Tom has interesting ideas on some subjects, such as selective dusting and other household chores. He stated that he is overworked, having to spend some 3 to 4 hours of time doing the housework each week. An amusing mini-autobiography to say the least. I even think some of the lady members found Tom to be amusing. THIS MONTH’S BIRTHDAYS: MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY

Currently there are 18 business memberships and 16 individual memberships. Corporate sponsor generosity makes much possible. There is a current membership promotion. John is the owner of the Stereo Shop in Greensburg. In a world of big electronic stores, John likened his store to a mom and pop business located in his hometown. His business deals with providing electronic entertainment in a rapidly changing technological world. Homes are having complete entertainment systems installed. This is from stereo systems, to high definition TV systems to complete home theatre systems. John advised that by the year 2006, the federal government would make analog TV systems change to high definition broadcasts. While older analog systems will still be usable, it will require a converter box to switch from HD back to an analog format at that time. Channels 2, 4 and 11 in Pittsburgh have HD on their broadcasts currently and can be viewed if you have the proper HD set. The quality of picture on the high definition TV is incredible. John has moved his shop and now has over 15,000 sq. ft of showroom where he has constructed individual rooms where consumers can get education on the latest technology for specific systems. He mentioned that homeowners are now building specific media rooms where all forms of technology are based within the household, from TV to stereo, to home theater, to computer. The costs of HD TV sets have come down in price since their introduction. John states that the cost today is approximately 20% higher than regular sets. THE ROTARY MINUTE - (Information regarding Rotary will be communicated by Ed Nemanic so that veteran and new members alike can secure new information or refresh their memories). Ed gave us the following information on Paul Harris Fellow Recognition. PHF recognition provides a very important incentive for the continuing support needed to underwrite the many programs of The Rotary Foundation that builds goodwill and understanding in the world. Rotary members who contribute $1,000 to the Foundation will be recognized or they may select someone else to have the honor bestowed upon….wife, husband, child, grandchild, community leader, etc. Paul Harris Fellow recipients receive a distinctive medallion, lapel pin, and certificate. Special recognition is given to members who make additional gifts. Adib belongs to many professional organizations, such as the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, to name only one. His writings have been published many times due to his expertise in the field of medicine. Adib is a pilot and has belonged to the Rotary Aviation Club. He has attended numerous Rotary International Conventions all over the world. He has just returned from the convention in San Antonio, TX. Adib has been very active over the years in securing and sending medical supplies to those in need overseas. His caring and love of all people helped make it easy for his Board of Directors to locate special projects for those in need. He got the Club off and running with our 1st Art Auction. This fundraiser will enable our Club to have additional funds to help fund special needs projects in the future. Our Club has been enriched this year because Adib has shown new members and longtime members of his continued commitment to Service Above Self. Thank you for the leadership that you have provided and will continue to provide to our Club. Congratulations on a year well served. THIS MONTH’S BIRTHDAYS: MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY
