WISE AND OTHERWISE
"The important thing is not to stop questioning." (Albert Einstein)

"A ruffled mind makes a restless pillow." (Charlotte Bronte)

TODAY’S INVOCATION was given by Rick Nedley. "Our Father, we thank You for the privilege of being together at this time and in this place. As Your people, we pray that Your love will unite us into a fellowship of discovery. Cleanse us of everything that would sap our strength for togetherness. Unravel the knots in our spirits. Cleanse the error of our minds. Free us from the bondage of our negative imaginations. Break down the barriers that sometime keep us apart and cause us to drift along without a dream. As we go from here - Explode in us new possibilities for service. Kindle within us the fires of Your compassion so that we may not wait too long to learn to love. May we be a people with loving purposes – Reaching out…Breaking walls…Building bridges…Let us be Your alleluia in Rotary."

SERGEANT AT ARMS Report – (Jeff Malloy) – We had one visiting Rotarian: Terry Marolt (Ligonier). Our guests were: John Dickson V. and Dr. Patrick Kelley (John Dickson), Charles Anderson (Mark Barnhart), Joyce Rossman (Carl Rossman), Matt Korosi (Cathy Daversa) and Katie Clymer (Anne Peagler). Today's attendance was 70. This included 57 members, 1 visiting Rotarian, 6 guests of members, 2 speakers and 4 students.

OUR WEEKLY MEETING

Jack Waite introduced C. J. and Jeff Valero. The Valero family business purchased Century Motors three years ago. They said that the recreational vehicle business is the business of "selling a dream". Many people like the dream of traveling across the nation or traveling to a site to enjoy time with nature. CJ's father started an auto repair business years ago in Slickville. They are now north of Delmont and employ 42 people. Their operation of RV sales, repair, customization, fabrication and RV rental is housed in a football field sized indoor building. They have a broad spectrum of vehicle units and tailor them to the individual client needs. There has been a big boost in sales, but particularly in rentals of recreational vehicles since September 11th. Many wish to travel within the confines of the Country. They also do business with the repairing of fleets of large companies such as Schwann's and also the State Police. A tour of one of their recreational vehicles was made available before and after the meeting.

OUR WEEKLY MEETING

Jack Waite spoke to us today about World Scouting. Scouting began in England in 1907. The father of Scouting is Robert S. Baden-Powell, whose book, Scouting for Boys, got worldwide attention. The principles of the Scout Promise and Law unite the world brotherhood of Scouting and prepare boys for adulthood in today's world. Scouting is the largest voluntary youth movement in the world with over 25 million members. Worldwide principles include: Duty to God and respect for individual beliefs, Loyalty to one's country and respect for its laws, Strength of world friendship and Scouting brotherhood, Service to others, Voluntary membership, Service by volunteer leaders, Independence from political influence and control, Training youth in responsible citizenship, physical and mental development, and character guidance through use of the patrol system, group activity, recognition through awards and learning by doing.

Adib Barsoum then told us about his experiences at the World Jamboree of the Boy Scouts that he attended in France in 1947. His group consisted of two patrols from the Cairo, Egypt area. Total attendance at the Jamboree was 30,000 scouts. He told of how times were still bad from the conclusion of World War II. His adventure took him eight weeks to complete. He was told to take warm clothes, sugar, sweets, canned milk, canned butter and cooking oil. This was due to the short supply of these items. Adib and his fellow scouts traveled on open air train cars that covered them with soot, slept on the deck of a boat that was filled to capacity… twice over, camped in tents and washed with cold water and were given ration books in the different countries that they traveled through. This was Adib's first trip from his home…and what an experience it was! He later became a troop leader and scout master.

January 28 – Mini-autobiographies and the Birthday Table.

OUR WEEKLY MEETING

Our Birthday Table host for the month of December was Bill Rudolph. Bill, along with the rest of us, wished those having a birthday in December a Happy Belated Birthday.

James Boggs gave us his mini-autobiography today. James was born in Huntington, WV, the son of a steelworker and a stay at home mom who taught him everything he knows. He was educated in the West Virginia public school system. James maintained an "A" average, started on the baseball team, ran track and was the Drum Major/Field Commander in the marching band. He was president of the Spanish Club and played lead tenor sax in the jazz ensemble. During his senior year in high school, James considered working in the steel mill, becoming an accountant or even a traveling jazz musician. After a discussion with his Spanish teacher he was pointed in the direction of scholarships. He attended Marshall University where he majored in Political Science. He was even able to travel to Russia, Latvia and Romania with the University's jazz ensemble. (This is where he realized that he would love to travel in the years to come). Scholarships helped him through Law School at West Virginia University. After WVU he returned to Huntington and opened a private law practice. He was there for three years until he was offered a position at Allegheny Power in 1990. Six years later he came to the Company office in Greensburg. He is now the Senior Attorney and the Manager of Claims. He is married to Susan who is also employed at Allegheny Power. Their "son" is an 8 ½ year old lab retriever named Barkley. His interests are sports (especially Marshall Football), music and traveling to hot sunny beaches in the Caribbean with Susan. James expressed how very happy he was that Bill Kern asked him to consider Rotary.
