OUR WEEKLY MEETING’S PROGRAM

The program was presented today by Gabe Monzo from the Arnold Palmer Regional Airport. April 4, 2005 is the date when Norwest Airlines will begin operations in Latrobe. He reported that there now would be access to 900 cities, 16 international locations on 6 continents. The flights will go to their hub in Detroit and routed from there. The travel time to Detroit is 1 hour and 10 minutes. The flights will leave Latrobe on a 34-passenger twin-engine turbo prop. There will be three flights a day, seven days a week. He noted benefits of not having to travel to Pittsburgh International, reasonable flight expense and free parking at Latrobe. Local companies, Sony, Kennametal and Raven Industries are reported to be very enthused about the new service. A portion of a $600,000 federal grant ($100,000) will go toward marketing that will begin within a week. The next step is to add regional jet service. More flights, if necessary, will be added to the schedule to accommodate the upcoming Senior PGA Event. The airport’s website is www.palmerairport.com

OUR WEEKLY MEETING’S PROGRAM

The program was presented today by Major Frank Monaco of the Pennsylvania State Police who spoke to us about New Policing Programs.
The PSP program uses computer programs to concentrate on specific areas of need. For example, traffic accident data is used to predict when the potential of future accidents are most likely to occur. Marked police cars are then concentrated on that stretch of highway to help slow down the speeders, thus reducing the possibility of accidents. He said that he would move to make more marked police cars, rather than unmarked cars, visible for protection.
Regarding money laundering, the criminal shift is now to have bulk transfers of money due to more efficient money trailing than in the past. This is result of the Patriot Act. He said that is common to apprehend persons who may have $10,000 to $20,000 in cash in their luggage or even grocery bags. Of course, drug sales are probably the reason for the cash. The proceeds from these apprehensions are used by the State for law enforcement equipment and even education throughout the state.
Methadone labs are common and dangerous. He reported that 128 meth labs were uncovered last year in the State. (He said that several states had around 2,000 labs raided.) Unfortunately, individual homes can contain labs. The toxic wastes produced during the manufacture are extremely hazardous and require special teams with protective gear to clean up the mess. The meth is terribly addictive, even after just one or two tries a person becomes “hooked”. He calls the meth addition “The plaque of the 21st century”. Local retail stores are even being educated on the sale of Sudafed because it can be used to produce the drug. Drug dealers have been known to buy out the store of this medication. In the state of Oklahoma you now need a prescription to purchase it.
