WISE AND OTHERWISE
”For everything that you have missed, you have gained something else.” (Emerson)

”The great thing about getting older is that you don’t lose all the other ages you have been.”

TODAY’S INVOCATION was given by Al Lazar. “Heavenly Father, we ask Your presence and blessing on our time together today. We come to learn from each other and to grow in spirit and character. We thank You for the opportunity in this Country to assemble ourselves at any time and at any place to discuss our concerns as citizens. We are mindful that many in our world do not enjoy such freedom. We ask You to bless our meal today. May it always remind us of Your concern and care for us until that day when we gather around Your Heavenly table in Your Kingdom. For this we pray. Amen”

OUR WEEKLY MEETING’S PROGRAM

Our meeting today was a Birthday Table Celebration hosted by Ed Meadows. Mr. Meadows started out by commenting that this month’s number of birthdays (8) as compared to last month’s (21) resulted in “quality” as opposed to “quantity”. Ed probably now has 21 less friends. Not to stop there he helped each of the 8 celebrate by complimenting some and jabbing others. I think that he might have kept 4 friends and lost 4 in this batch. Really not that bad in that department.
We celebrated with cake and song.
(It’s nice to be able to meet with friends, laugh and enjoy an hour together each week). Thanks Ed.

OUR WEEKLY MEETING’S PROGRAM

Our speaker today was Colleen Peterson, owner of Port of Call Travel in Greensburg. Colleen advised us that Port of Call has been serving the needs of travelers since 1988. Travel in the past two years has been very affordable due to special deals that have resulted from a hesitancy of some to travel since September 11th. She said that the times are a changing due to a good economy and more people now willing to travel. Three popular charters are to Aruba, Punta Cana and Cancun. Aruba looks forward to providing a hospitable atmosphere for US citizens. Punta Cana is for beach lovers who like expansive white sand beaches. Special separate resorts in Cancun can offer a great vacation that is away for the college vacation area and their activities. Colleen took our minds to the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas, which is beautiful, expansive and somewhat expensive. Hawaii is always a favorite for its beauty and hospitality. Las Vegas, aka Sin City, is also a very popular get away spot. Europe has had very little travel traffic in the past two years, this too is also changing. Italy is always a favorite. She recommends you book now since rates will probably be increasing next year. Finally, while the internet is a great source of information on possible destinations and pricing, she encouraged that you seek the help of a travel agency that can meet with you face to face to discuss options and price.

OUR WEEKLY MEETING’S PROGRAM

Our speaker today was Julie Donovan, Public Relations Manager, with the Laurel Highlands Visitors Bureau. Their mission is to bring people to experience the beauty, activities and historical atmosphere of the region. Julie noted that 8,000 people are employed in the tourism activities of Westmoreland County. Last year $366 million was spent in tourism. To name a few, areas of interest are the Lincoln Highway, The National Road (US Route 40), our forts, theatres, dining, shopping and outdoor activities. The Frank Lloyd Wright, Fallingwaters Tour is also a great area of interest for tourists. She noted that the 250th Commemoration of the French and India War would start July 1st. The Pittsburgh Symphony will perform, some of George Washington’s original manuscripts will be on display and other tours of Fort Ligonier and Fort Pitt will be available. There will be a Spring Bed and Breakfast Tour, which will allow you to visit a number of locations to see what each has to offer. Another area of interest is the Great Allegheny Passage, the 150-mile bike trail from Pittsburgh to Cumberland.
We are very fortunate to live in the Laurel Highlands Region, where natural beauty, history and leisurely activities abound.
You can visit their website at www.laurelhighlands.org for more information.
Also, grants, partially funded by a tourism tax, are available to any business in a tourism related business. Grant request forms are available from the Bureau.
