WISE AND OTHERWISE
"People forget how fast you did a job; but they remember how well you did it."

"You may delay, but time will not." (Franklin)

TODAY’S INVOCATION was given by Mark Barnhart. "Heavenly Father, we pause this noontime to thank you for all that You have blessed us with, particularly our family and friends. May we ever realize that we are just a small part of Your creation, but we are all Your children. Help us to reach out and touch others in a caring and helpful way, ever mindful that we ask for so much from You and give so little in return. Many of us are looking forward to the changing of the seasons and the coming of Spring. If there are any more snows, please deposit the bulk of the snow in Ed Nemanic's driveway."
(Editor's note – I publish them as they are given to me!)

OUR WEEKLY MEETING

Our program today was presented by Robert Qualters, a painter and Mark Perrott, a photographer. Their works are currently on display at the Westmoreland Museum of American Art. The exhibition, "Points of View – A Shared Vision", is a collaboration of the two Pittsburgh artists. In this series of painted photographs, each contributes their talents to one another's work. Mark's photographic portraits are taken and then given to Robert who then adds his personal painting talents to the photographs. Prior to the finished product, the two men continue a constant dialogue. The two mediums are used to create an account of Pittsburgh's history, landscape and people.

We were treated to personal tour of these artist's works.

"Make the best use of what is in your power, and take the rest as it happens."

TODAY’S INVOCATION was given by Bob Wilson. "In times like these, O Lord, we call upon you to guide us. Grant to our leaders discerning spirits that look beyond their wisdom to the truth; help us measure our resolves in the light of good for all people. Bring to each of us that capability to do the good, the kind, the noble for the benefit of all. Engender hope by acts of goodwill and friendship. We ask it in our Master's name. Amen."

WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST MEMBER – Patrick Kelley. We look forward to working with you, to put Service Above Self, to serve our community, nation and the world through this wonderful Rotary organization.

SNOW REMOVAL – Seems that Mark Barnhart has been sending emails to President Ed, rubbing in the fact that he was enjoying the climate in Florida…heat and sun, as opposed to our Greensburg snow and cold. Ed apparently snapped! I have been told that he phoned Mayor Karl Eisaman and asked him to truck the extra snow taken from the streets of our town and place it in Mark's parking lot for storage/disposal. Looks like Mark messed with the wrong guy.

HOST FAMILIES ARE NEEDED FOR OUR NEW INBOUND EXCHANGE STUDENT. It is believed that we will receive a student from either Bosnia or Poland. Please consider hosting the student for several months. If you are unable to host, please ask your friends if they would like to share in the wonderful experience of hosting. Kati Doran has any information you may need.

WESTMORELAND MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART – Did I mention that next week's meeting will be held at the museum? Just checking.

THE ROTARY MINUTE (presented by Chuck Strobel) – WORLD UNDERSTANDING MONTH.
The month of February is special in the Rotary calendar since it is designated World Understanding Month. The month also includes the anniversary of the first meeting of Rotary held on February 23, 1905, now designated World Understanding and Peace Day. Rotary International asks all Rotary clubs to emphasize "understanding and goodwill as essential for world peace". To accomplish this, many clubs arrange for an international speaker, invite youth Exchange Students and international scholars from schools and universities to club meetings, plan programs featuring former Group Study Exchange team members and schedule other programs with an international emphasis. World Understanding month is a chance for every club to pause, plan and promote the Fourth Avenue of Service – Rotary's continued quest for goodwill, peace and understanding among people of the world.

NEXT WEEK'S PROGRAM – February 25 – Mark Perrott, photographer, and Bob Qualters, a painter. Their works will be highlighted in the exhibition "Points of View: A Shared Vision" opening at the Westmoreland County Museum of American Art on February 23rd.

OUR WEEKLY MEETING

Our speaker today was Kurt Shaw, Art Critic for the Tribune Review. Kurt started in the newspaper business in the 1980's as a cartoonist and illustrator. He was in graphic designs and in the 90's produced fine arts and moved to California. Originally he produced large scale art work on wall structures, then he changed direction. (You had to be there to hear what caused him to then start to produce artwork such as "flaming bears"). Kurt returned to the Greensburg community and will celebrate his two year anniversary at the Trib very soon. He advised us that the Pittsburgh area is very high on the list as a popular destination for art in America. The art culture is defined locally. He first seeks to connect with the artist and then the audience when at a show. Kurt says that he makes no apologies for what he says in his articles. He said that contemporary art is where he is most knowledgeable. He is also a photography critic. He tries to connect directly with the artist through his review and challenges the artist and the community. You may contact him at teddybearflambe@attbi.com

OUR WEEKLY MEETING

Our speakers today were Susan Nemet, Curator of Education at the Westmoreland Museum of American Art and Pat Bratcher, a docent, who both spoke on the Pennsylvania History Project. The program supplements the Pennsylvania History curriculum being taught in the 4th grade history classes of the local elementary schools. The students are being brought to the museum by their teachers. There is a volunteer group, formed in 2001, which consists of 27 women and 1 man who do outreach. Originally one school participated. Last year four schools…and the hope is eight schools will participate this year. Pat explained that the goal is to "marry history and the museum". She commented that a painting is worth a thousand words. Through her slide show presentation she showed how students are able to view art at the museum and learn about our local and state history, our industrial revolution and its importance to our nation, our economic growth, population growth, pollution issues and natural beauty of our community.
