WISE AND OTHERWISE
"Nothing is a waste of time if you use the experience wisely."
"Don't take the bull by the horns; take him by the tail; then you can let go when you want to."
Bill Kern gave the invocation this afternoon. "Our Heavenly Father, we give thanks this day for many things. We give thanks for the opportunity to be among friends, and we give thanks for the opportunity to help those less fortunate. We thank you for the freedoms we share and the resources we have to support Rotary's efforts to eradicate polio from the face of the earth. Help us and guide us as Rotarians, as we continue endeavors for world peace, goodwill and understanding among all people. We now ask Thy blessing upon the food we have partaken. May it nourish us and strengthen us as we serve humanity. Amen."

Mini-autobiographies:
Pete Cecconi told us he was born in Blairsville in Indiana County. He had an early interest in drawing and sketching. He considered commercial art as his future, however, after working a summer job at construction, it led him to his life's work as an architect. He attended and graduated from Penn State. He was a member of the ROTC. He joined a firm in Cleveland and then was drafted in the Army and sent to Germany. Upon returning to Greensburg, he joined Bill Roach's firm. He now operates his own architecture firm. He and Jo Lane have 7 children, 6 have graduated from college….1 to finish in a couple years.
Guy Davis is a "local kid". Born in Greensburg and lived all his life in Westmoreland County. He attended Greensburg Central Catholic and then graduated college from Boston College. He has always worked with the family business, Mountain View Interiors. He is a reservist and restores antique cars. He joined Rotary in 1985 and has perfect attendance! He has been to two Rotary International Conventions and was our Club's President from 1999 to 2000. He is married to Leona and has 2 children to keep him busy.
Sheldon Moore was born in central West Virginia. He says that "he was basically raised in church"…his father was a pastor. In his younger years, he attended seven different schools due to his father's ministry. He was overseas with the Air Force for 4 years. He went and got his degree in accounting and worked for a bank in Clarksburg, W. Virginia. Two years after his marriage, he left the banking field and attended and graduated from seminary school. He pastored in this area for 12 years before moving back to Clarksburg to pastor a "great church" there for 10 years. He has been back in Greensburg for the past 6 years. He says that he "has the most wonderful job in the world". He is married to his wife of 28 years and has a son age 20 and a daughter age 17.

OUR WEEKLY MEETING
Our program today was presented by Virginia Lieberman. She is the HERO Project Director. The HERO Project is a child sexual abuse prevention campaign that is targeted to adults who are in the position of protecting children and preventing sexual abuse of children. Virginia said "A child that is being sexually abused needs a hero to protect them." Unfortunately, when sexual abuse is occurring, someone normally knows or has an idea that is it occurring but does not get involved in the reporting of the abuse or even intervening. Symptoms of abuse include a definite change in the child's personality, such as depression or withdrawal. Also, nightmares or other sleep disorders and even an increase in physical complaints. We have the responsibility to believe a child if they say that they have been sexually abused. We must take responsibility to become involved to help these children. Eight Westmoreland County agencies collaborate to help these children: Adelphoi USA, The Center Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, General Carbide Corporation, Latrobe Area Hospital Emergency Department, ParentWISE, St. Vincent College Prevention Projects, Westmoreland County Children's Bureau and Westmoreland County Juvenile Probation Department. Virginia said that they have had 130 calls to the hotline. 1-877-874-HERO. It is operational 24 hours per day. Television ads, brochures and posters are getting the message out.

OUR WEEKLY MEETING
Our program today was presented by Michael Millward. He is the Warden at the Westmoreland County Prison. He spoke to us about the program to have inmates obtain employment will serving their sentences. Michael stated that he "believes in accountability that leads to rehabilitation." Inmates are reviewed by an assessment team that evaluates the inmate to provide a proper fit for possible employment. He stated that $70.00 per week is deducted from the income of the inmate and applied back to the community fund for room and board expenses.
Currently there are 28 inmates in the work release program. The ultimate goal is to have these individuals leave the prison with work skills and employment in a hope to not have them return due to continued bad habits and lack of employment.

WISE AND OTHERWISE
"Fall seven times, stand up eight." (Japanese Proverb)
"Having politeness and consideration for others is like investing pennies and getting back dollars."
Rick Nedley gave the invocation this afternoon. "Lord, make us an instrument of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is darkness, light; And where there is sickness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; To be understood as to understand; To be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen."

THE ROTARY MINUTE (presented by Cesare Muccari)
DISTRICT CONFERENCE
Most Rotarians have never attended a Rotary District Conference. They have not experienced one of the most enjoyable and rewarding privileges of Rotary membership.
A district conference is for all club members and their spouses, not just for club officers and committee members. The purpose of a district conference is for fellowship, good fun, inspirational speakers and discussion of matters that make one's Rotary membership more meaningful. Every person who attends a district conference finds that being a Rotarian becomes even more rewarding because of the new experiences, insights and acquaintances developed at the conference. Those who attend a conference enjoy going back, year after year.
Every one of Rotary's more that 525 districts has a conference annually. These meeting are considered so important that the Rotary International president selects a knowledgeable Rotarian as his personal representative to attend and address each conference. The program always includes several outstanding entertainment features, interesting discussions and inspirational programs.
One of the added benefits of attending a district conference is the opportunity to become better acquainted with members of one's own club in an informal setting. Lasting friendships grow from the fellowship hours at the district conference.
THE ROTARY 2001 COUNCIL ON LEGISLATION (contributed by Bill Kern, this year's district delegate)
A change adopted this year: Club Constitution: Allows attendance credit for attending a club sponsored community event or meeting, or club board meeting or service committee meeting.
NEXT WEEK'S MEETING: Our speaker will be Michael Millward, Warden, Westmoreland County Prison.
OUR WEEKLY MEETING
Our program today was hosted by Nelson Mayer, member of our Club's Grant Review Committee. Each year, our Club is directed to distribute funds from the Madeline Nichols Fund (which was set up on instructions from the Harry Miller Estate in honor of his sister). Funds must only be distributed in connection with community service projects. This year a total of $10,000 was presented to 5 community service organizations. They are as follows:
Greensburg Fire Prevention Bureau - $1,500.00
Scott Hirst accepted the grant and advised that the monies will be used to continue to educate pre-school through 5th grade students in the Greensburg Salem and Hempfield Schools. The program teaches fire safety, home escape, Stop Drop and Roll and instructions on the use of 911. Over 5,000 kids benefit each year.
Greensburg Hempfield Library - $1,500.00
Cesare Muccari advised that to keep up with the times, the monies will help to start and build a DVD collection for the children's library.
Greensburg Ministerial Association - $1,000.00
Reverend Ed Fromm spoke about the Emergency Shelter for Women and Children that is located on South Maple Avenue, and hopes to be opened later this summer. The goal is to provide up to 60 days of shelter for those in need and to provide information on agencies that are beneficial to these women and children.
Greensburg YMCA - $1,000.00
Jennifer Prohaska advised us that the monies will be used to buy A.E.D training units (Artificial External Difibulators) that are used in CPR instruction courses.
Rotary After School Program (RAP) - $5,000.00
Jack Waite advised that currently 20 students are currently enrolled in this program that was started by our Club. He stated that they are looking to take this program "to a higher level". Colleges and other agencies are being contacted to achieve this goal.
