Rotary FLASH of 12-27-2005
THE FLASH of The Rotary Club of Greensburg for December 27, 2005Things To Remember
“Behold the turtle. He only makes progress when he sticks his neck out.” James B. Conant
“I have no Yesterdays, Time took them away; Tomorrow may not be-- But I have Today.” P.Y. McGinnis
“We have to live but one day at a time, but we are living for eternity in that one day.” Anon.
Presiding over our festivities today was our esteemed President Cathy Baumann. She and her Rotary Board came up with a real winner of an idea when they made this Christmas week meeting a family affair.
INVOCATION was given by Mark Barnhart.
SERGEANT OF ARMS REPORT by Dr. Bill McGrath indicating that we had 45 Rotarians in attendance, and many many guests of our families and friends. We filled the room!
There will be no announcements or business matters carried on at our session today, Cathy said. It is to be a day of entertainment and enjoyment. And it really was.
First of all, MARK BARNHART had a slide show which made the kids and families guess whose birthdays we celebrated.
Beginning with a slide of Rudolph the Red nosed Reindeer, and we guessed that it was Bill Rudolph, the other slides went down from there – really clever, though. Our birthdays included Bill Rudolph, Will Brown, Robin Acton, Doug Ramm, Bob Bloom, John Sproull, Cathy Baumann, Jack Moldovan, and Nelson Mayer. Happy Birthday was sung lightly by the children attending.
After Cathy quizzed us whether or not we all had a visit from Santa this year - and it seems he didn’t miss a one of us - must have been good boys and girls this year! (Or is it time for confession?) She introduced our program for the day which was a Magician – Chuck Rygle from Rices Landing, PA 15357; (724) 592-6009. He did an excellent job of mystifying the boys and girls, and all of the adults as well. I still haven’t a clue how he did some of those. But then, he’s the magician.
We closed the meeting in our usual manner with the four way test -- and it would be good if we reviewed that test each day of the new year. If we did, it would indeed be a Happy New Year!
REBECKA HUTCHINSON will be compiling the Flash beginning January 3. Thank you, Rebecka!

Rotary Flash of 12-13-2005
THE FLASH of The Rotary Club of Greensburg for December 13, 2005Things To Remember
“ Instead of being a time of unusual behavior, Christmas is perhaps the only time in the year when people can obey their natural impulses and express their true sentiments without feeling self conscious, and perhaps, even a little bit foolish. Fact of the matter is, Christmas is about the only chance a person has to be simply themselves.”
“A Christmas candle is a lovely thing. It makes no noise at all; and quite unselfishly, grows small.”
OUR CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY PARTY at the Mountain View Inn was a stunning success! The arrangements by our President elect were simply outstanding. The food was good, the company was great, and the spirit of Christmas was among us. Mary, you did us proud. From the opening remarks to the closing four way test, we were all involved – either by participating or by laughing our heads off at some of our members’ antics, or by being so very proud of those receiving honors…a great time was had by all.
Our invocation was given by John Dickson asking God for guidance in our lives and choices…giving thanks for what we have been given..by the way, John, we know of a couple good opportunities for you to continue this eloquent gift of yours…
Mary Clymer and Carl Rossman began with a disagreement about whether a computer was male or female…and if you don’t know, make sure you ask them. President Cathy took time to share a email that Bob Bloom received from a mother of a recipient of our dictionaries given to third graders. It was a very moving testimony to the worthwhileness of that project. We must keep it going!
There was a clip board passed around TO SIGN UP FOR OUR DECEMBER 27 MEETING AT FOUR POINTS. We are encouraged to bring our family members and friends, but you need to sign up or call Mary if you are going to attend and how many you are inviting to this special event. What a great fellowship time for our whole Rotary family – don’t miss it!
The entertainment was an illusionist who had a very special gift of involving us all – even the Polish one in our midst - whom we shall refer to as Charles from now on – we usually call him Tom Jachimowicz, but who knows – what a change of name will do. However, it was the same kielbasa anyway you cut it! We were all in stitches. Thanks, Tom, er - Charles – for adding to our merriment. Dennis Cremones learned to pour salt, Dr. Steven Ender almost lost his watch, others shared their rings…what a fun night!
Believe it or not, that was not even the highlight -- we had three Paul Harris Fellow Awards presented. They were all to very deserving recipients:
Gene James presented one to Barbara Nakles; Guy Davis presented one to his wife Leona Davis; and Mary Clymer presented one to John E. Sproull, Jr.
Welcome to the splendid family of Paul Harris Fellows! We salute you! We appreciate you and the example you set that brought this honor to you!
That left the last honor of the night, ROTARIAN OF THE YEAR, and it was given a dedicated Rotarian, past president, and in this Season of Peace, where service above self goes beyond the bounds of the Rotary Club – there was only one choice this year, and it was GUY DAVIS. How proud we all are of him, and what he is. Congratulations, Guy!
Finally, the dynamic duo of Robin Acton and Sue McFarland awarded filled baskets of goodies to several lucky guests and Rotarians whose birthdays coincided with the story that Sue was reading! And a good time was had by all.
Remember – we meet as usual on Dec.. 20 -- Rumor has it THAT WE WILL VOTE ON A PLACE TO MEET – MAKE SURE YOU ARE THERE TO VOTE.

Rotary Flash of 12-06-2005
THE FLASH of The Rotary Club of Greensburg for December 6, 2005Things To Remember
Probably the reason we all go so haywire at Christmas time with endless, unrestrained, and often silly buying of gifts….is that we don’t quite know how to put our love into words.
If I live only for myself, I will have small troubles – but they will seem great. If, however, I live for others, I may have great troubles – but they will appear small to me. For this is the true Spirit of Christmas.
