"We come to you O God, knowing that the times in which we live need men and women of integrity, those who will reach out in hope and peace to their neighbors, and show the way of caring and sharing. OUR WEEKLY MEETING
Our speaker today was District Governor George Wood. DG Wood expounded on Rotary International President Rich King's theme - MANKIND IS OUR BUSINESS. Rotary needs to extend compassionate aid to all around the world since it is the business of Rotary to improve the quality of life for those in need. There is a need to reach out to community leaders to help obtain this goal. DG Wood pointed out 4 main challenges that Rotary is facing: 1). There is a need to increase membership. 2). There is a need to enhance Rotary's public image, thus creating more awareness of what we are all about. 3). There must be education and training of Rotarians. This will make our Clubs stronger and clearer on why we are here and for what purpose. 4). "Global Quest". Strive for 1 new member to each Club every month. The goal of 300,000 new Rotarians could be realized. Remember, you have the opportunity to ask the right person to consider Rotary.
DG Wood informed us of the Wheelchair Project. The need was for specially designed wheelchairs that could travel over unpaved areas. This would allow for persons of special assistance needs in underdeveloped countries to be able to be more mobile. The Rotarian who started this project has committed 1 million dollars of his own money for the project. The chairs cost $150 a piece. We were asked to consider donating $5 per member for the purchase of more wheelchairs. The District Governor stated "that we could change the quality of life for someone".
The Rotary Foundation uses its money to help those in need in all areas of the world. Examples were mentioned where monies were used to provide food for children where they previously had to sift through a dump looking for scraps of food. In another case, a community's young were all experiencing poor eyesight. Funds have made it possible to educate the community on proper nutrition and better ways to farm. Due to the increasing need for humanitarian aid, it was suggested that more become sustaining members for Paul Harris. (If interested, please see Bob Wilson).
There are 3 areas that the DG thought we as a District could improve. 1). Youth Exchange 2). Ambassadorial Scholarships and 3). Group Study Exchange.
Dates to remember are: The Rotary Foundation Dinner at Nemacolin on November 3rd.
District Conference at Seven Springs May 10th and 11th , 2002.

OUR WEEKLY MEETING
Our speaker today was Larry Wilde, a humorist who is a motivational speaker. Larry is the Director of The Carmel Institute of Humor and the author of 53 books with sales of over 12 million copies. He was a former stand up comedian for 25 years. He has appeared on the Tonight Show and the Mary Tyler Moore Show. Larry believes a good sense of humor can benefit your life. He feels that a good sense of humor is like a first aid kit. His presentation to us included many jokes that kept us laughing throughout the meeting. His mission is to inform us that when times are tough, we all need a good sense of humor to get us through. It will help us improve our physical and mental health. His 5-step program is as follows:
1). Get in the habit of laughing out loud. Let out the joy. Physical releases from laughing puts more oxygen into the blood stream and makes us feel better. Happy people are healthier and live longer.
2). Learn to laugh at yourself. Laughter is a spontaneous burst of affection. He said, "Angels fly because they take themselves lightly."
3). Take a light-hearted attitude. He reported that 80% of people with a good sense of humor do better at work. Teamwork at the workplace can be maximized with the proper good sense of humor. Establish a tension free atmosphere by taking a "humor break" rather than just a coffee break. Bosses with a sense of humor seem to be sensed as a member of the team and get more respect.
4). Expose yourself to something funny every day. The American Medical Association said that laughter is a great tranquilizer. A good belly laugh burns off about 35 calories. Life extension can result and it slows down the aging process.
5). Try to see the funny side of life even if you are up to your eyeballs in alligators. There is a very fine line between comedy and tragedy, laughter and tears - It is just as easy to laugh as it is to cry.

Our Club Assembly was presented by Treasurer Mark Barnhart.
A Treasurer's Report was given for the year ending June 30, 2001. Information was given regarding member dues and meal costs. It was mentioned that the Board has voted to eliminate the Birthday Assessment. The Madeline Nichols Memorial (Miller Estate) monies were discussed. Prior grants have been presented to the St. Clair Park amphitheater project and the Rotary After School Project. The grant process and application procedure was presented. Any member who wishes to propose a community needs program is asked to see any board member to secure the necessary grant form. Jeff Malloy gave a report on our Club's website. He reported that we have had a heavy volume of "hits" to the site. It is being continually updated and now contains pictures from our Club activities. It has been a big success. Katy Doran gave a report on the Student Exchange Program. This year will be a joint exchange with Belgium. Gail Hepler will be our outbound student to Belgium. Patrick Andre will be our inbound student. Members are asked to sign up to spend some time with Patrick during his visit with us. It would be nice if he was able to attend sporting events, cultural events and visit historical and entertaining sites. Dick McNeel reported that the family picnic has 87 members and family signed up. He also is requesting that members sign up to be Program Chairs and Birthday Table Chairs. In regard to our fund raising activities, it was noted that we must continue to have quality fundraising to enable us to continue our scholarship program that currently gives out $11,500.00 annually. The Health Screening Project cannot do this alone. Discussion and a general consensus of those in attendance that the Arts and Heritage Festival Food Booth should continue. It provides revenue, opportunity for member activity and public awareness of our Club. The Art Auction will need a chairperson to take charge if it is to continue. Another general consensus of those in attendance was that we should not consider any type of raffles to raise funds.
