OUR WEEKLY MEETING’S PROGRAM

The program today was presented by Carl Rossman. Carl spoke to us about the United States Air Force. He gave us a very interesting slide show of the “tools of the trade”: Fighters – Warthogs, F15s, F16s. Helicopters, rescue Hueys, MH53s and the Blackhawk. Reconnaissance, RC 135s and TR1s. Space vehicles, satellites (and on a side note, even some technology that went into the Mars Rover). Tankers, KC135s (which is the primary system in use today for aerial refueling). Trainers. Transports, such as Fat Albert that can carry tanks, trucks, tractor-trailers and personnel all at one time. Bombers, B1, B2 Spirit and his favorite, which he flew often, the B52. The B52 is two stories high, has a maximum speed of .84 Mach, travels normally at 31,000 to 45,000 feet and has a maximum loaded weight of 488,000 lbs.
It was quite impressive to see the technology that is available for use by our military.

OUR WEEKLY MEETING’S PROGRAM

The program today was dedicated to the Rotary Club of Greensburg’s presentation of a Paul Harris Fellow to Robert Van Atta. Mr. Van Atta’s accomplishments in the preservation of history in our region were detailed by Tom Stewart, Editor of The Tribune Review, James Steeley, Director of the Westmoreland County Historical Society, Dr. Frank Cassell, President of the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg and Sue McFarland, Managing Editor of the Tribune Review. Mr. Van Atta’s twenty seven years at the Tribune Review included 1,393 consecutive Sunday installments of his featured “Vignettes”. He never missed an issue. His column informed his readers of the rich history of our region, nation and world. Even after his retirement, his writings will continue. The Tribune Review will republish some of his most interesting articles. He has also written a number of histories, served on many of the local Board of Directors, was the first recipient of the Arthur St. Clair Award, helped with the creation of the campus at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg for which he received the University’s highest recognition, and many other accomplishments for the benefit of this community. The speakers remarked that Bob is the “primary source of knowledge of the great history of our area” and “makes the learning of history interesting”. It was noted that a wide spread knowledge of local history is extremely important to a community. Mr. Van Atta has helped our community immensely in this area.

THE ROTARY MINUTE - presented by Tom Hower
ROTARY AND THE YOUTH – IMPROVING HEALTH
Rotary clubs, working on their own, or with Rotary Foundation grants, help provide basic health care for young people. Rotary club members in Honduras used a US$150,000 Rotary Foundation grant to establish a center where working and abandoned children up to age 16 received primary health care and health education, attend educational programs and arts and crafts classes, and meet with peer mentors for personal support.
In Guatemala, a Rotary Foundation 3-H grant is teaching women about health and nutrition for themselves and their newborn babies. The program also provides nutritional supplements for the infants. To encourage more medical students to pursue pediatrics, the Rotary Club of Newmarket, New Zealand is funding three internships in the field. In Colombia, where some 40,000 children are homeless, Rotary volunteers from four countries – Colombia, Germany, England and France – sponsor medical treatment for street children who are often the victims of violence. The project includes setting up medical clinics within to treat malnutrition, respiratory infections, gunshot and knife wounds and other injuries.
Through the Rotary Foundation’s PolioPlus program and global eradication efforts, more than one billion children worldwide have been immunized against polio since 1985. By the year 2005, Rotary contributions will reach a half billion US dollars to eradicate the crippling disease. UNICEF estimates that there are two to three million children walking normally today who would have contracted polio were it not for the immunization efforts of the past 15 years.

OUR WEEKLY MEETING’S PROGRAM

The Birthday Presenter, Morrie Brand, used the theme “Rise of The Creative Class” to link members who had birthdays in March with famous creative persons born the same day. Each was then asked to pick whom they would like to dine with if they had the opportunity. We sang and ate cake. Happy Birthday!

John Mizikar gave his mini-autobiography. He was born in Pittsburgh. He moved to this area at an early age and attended elementary school in Norvelt. He attended Greensburg Central Catholic Sr. High School and then the Westmoreland County Community College. He enjoys cars, dogs and drawing. He has entered some of his works in local art shows. His career began at age 18 when he started working at the Four Points Sheraton and worked his way from bus boy to dishwasher to waiter and to assistant manager. This was from 1980 to 1990. He then decided to give New York City a try. He worked at Trump’s Plaza Hotel. He said that this was a great learning experience for him. Due to his father’s illness, he returned home to help out. He worked at Sharky’s Café for five years. His last four years have been spent at the Sheraton Four Points where he is the Banquet Manager.
