"Never put off until tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow." (Mark Twain)
Tom Hower gave the invocation this afternoon. "However much our worldly goods or our prominence may be, the more important things are faith and hope and charity. Our faith in God Whose power and Whose glory great we know, not through our human vision but because He tells us so. Our hope for perfect holiness and sanctity of soul, and for the special grace to gain our everlasting goal. And last but not least of all, our willingness to love each high and humble neighbor and Almighty God above. So let us pray and let us strive for faith and hope anew and charity to honor God in everything we do." (James J. Metcalfe)

OUR WEEKLY MEETING
Our speaker today was Timothy G. Hewitt, an employment attorney from Latrobe. Away from work, Tim is an avid runner who has been a member of the United States 100-Kilometer team in 1999 and 2000 and continuing to be one of the highest ranked ultra marathoners in the country. He said that "I love distances over 26 miles" (normal marathon distance). Last summer he raced 135 miles across Death Valley in 120 degree heat. He then signed up to compete in the Iditasport Impossible 2001 Race. The race runs the historic Iditarod Trail from Knick, Alaska (outside Anchorage) to Nome, traveling the entire route of the historic Iditarod Trail. While very few individuals have completed the race on foot in the race's 14 years history, Tim completed the race in a record-setting 26 days (previously the record was 42 days), despite suffering a stress fracture in his right tibia about 520 miles into the 1100-mile course. Racers are without support with the exception of drop bags which are flown into villages along the route. Tim described the weather, terrain, beauty, solitude and challenges along the way: 20, 30, 40 below zero temperatures at times, winds of 70-80 mph at their worst, the beauty of the Yukon River (2 miles wide at some points), hallucinations, stress fracture, 7 layers of clothes on top and 3 layers on his legs and eating a very high caloric intake while still losing weight.

THE ROTARY MINUTE (Presented by Chris Rizk)
THE ROTARY FOUNDATION'S BEGINNING
Some magnificent projects grow from very small seeds. The Rotary Foundation has that sort of modest beginning.
In 1917, RI President Arch Klumph told the delegates to the Atlanta Convention that "it seems eminently proper that we should accept endowments for the purpose of doing good in the world." The response was polite and favorable, but the fund was slow to materialize. A year later the "Rotary Endowment Fund," as it was first labeled, received it's first contribution of US$26.50 from the Rotary Club of Kansas City, Missouri, which was the balance of the Kansas City Convention account following the 1918 annual meeting. Additional small amounts were annually contributed, but after six years it was reported that the endowment fund had only reached US$700. A decade later, The Rotary Foundation was formally established at the 1928 Minneapolis Convention. In the next four years the Foundation fund grew to US$50,000. In 1937 a US$ 2 million goal was announced for The Rotary Foundation, but these plans were abandoned with the outbreak of World War II.
In 1947, upon the death of Paul Harris, a new era opened for The Rotary Foundation as memorial gifts poured in to honor the founder of Rotary. From that time, The Rotary Foundation has been achieving its noble objective of furthering "understanding and friendly relations between peoples of different nations." By 1954 the Foundation received for the first time a half million dollars in contributions in a single year, and in 1965 a million dollars was received.
It is staggering to imagine that from those humble beginnings, The Rotary Foundation is now receiving more than US $65 million each year for educational and humanitarian work around the world.
OUR WEEKLY MEETING
Our speaker today was Dr. Schuyler Foerster, President of the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh. The Council has had a 31 year relationship with Rotary. The council is a non-profit organization that focuses their presentations on high school students.
Each year our Club sends several students from the three local high schools to participate in a day's worth of programs, lectures and study groups dealing with world affairs. Participants are given a real world policy problem. They join in discussion groups and report back to a panel. The groups have met at the David Lawrence Convention Center in the past. On average about 320 students and 75 teachers and chaperones attend. Past presentations have included: China, The Middle East, Globalization, and Europe in Transition. This year's topic is to be chosen from a short list of: Russia, Latin America, South Asia, or Stability, Free Market Democracy. A venue will be announced for the meeting that will be held in November. In a normal year, 10,000-12,000 people are spoken to from the 85 councils around the country. Dr. Foerster said that the Council is "dedicated to community outreach" with the focus of "bringing foreign policy issues to the grass roots".

OUR WEEKLY MEETING
Our speaker today was fellow member Dr. Pradeep Kumar. He talked about the complexity of the human body and that it could take more than a thousand years for us to understand the biological, chemical and physical activities within the human digestive system. The digestive system is made up of the esophagus, stomach, intestines and colon. He wanted to talk about the problems with re-flux disease and heartburn and how the symptoms are chest pain and a burning sensation which is caused by acid trying to get into the lungs over a long period of time. This can result in ulcers and cancer. Colon cancer is the 2nd most common form of cancer. A polyp is a growth on the surface and is usually the source of most cancers if not caught in time. Gastro-intestinal bleeding can either be dark red, bright red or black in color. Any signs should be addressed immediately to prevent additional complications.
(My thanks to Mark Barnhart for taking the notes during my absence.)
